Hello

I don't know if this is the correct place to ask this question. I got my conditional green card in July of this year. I am extremely happy because i won't deal with UCSIS for the next 2 years. My husband is American (obviously) and his parents are Irish. He plays the drums in a bagpipe band and next year he and the band are going to Scotland to compete in the world's bagpipe bands competition. He's very excited to participate there, his parents are going also and my husband wants me to go with him.....NOW, I have a conditional green card but I am Peruvian. Do I need to apply for a visa to go to Scotland, even though I have an American gren card? My husband and his parents told me I don't need a visa, only my green card but they don't understand that even though I have a green card, I am still Peruvian....can anybody help me with this???? Thank you so much in advance

You are correct. Unless your country of origin (Peru) has some visa regulations with Scotland, where you could walk in then you can just go with your green card. If not, you need to apply for a visa before hand. This all changes once you have your American citizenship and American passport, then you wouldn't need a visa to visit scotland. Check out http://www.scotland.com/travel/visa-passports/ for more information.

Yes, you'll need a visa:

Visa Requirements Scotland

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Hi,

Based on everything I see on the UK visa site is the answer is YES. Although I don't think it is a big issue. You've got plenty of time to get one. Makes it much easier because you do have a green card. Good luck and have fun!!

As most stated, you will need a visa when traveling to Scotland. Please check with your nearest British Embasy to find out how to obtain a visa.

You'll have a great time - your husband must be really good on the bagpipes to be competing at that level. Remind your husband and his family that the green card is only applicable for the US - it means that the US will allow you back in - but it has no value to other countries unless they specifically chose to recognize it (ie. Canada).

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

This is correct. Until you have your US Passport (and citizenship), you will have to apply for entry to all countries as if you were a Peruvian i.e., as if you were not married to an American. So, all visa and restrictions still apply. The BIG difference is that because you are now married to an American and living in America, you should be able to obtain a visa with much greater ease. One of the biggest reasons for refusing visas is that the country you are applying for wants to be sure you GO HOME because they don't want you to stay and become a ward of their country. (That's why the good ole USA makes it so hard to get in as well and rejects most tourist visas). But most countries do not require US citizens to get visas (unless for political reasons, China and Russia being two of the few, in "retaliation " and to earn hard currency) because they believe that you plan to return. They also believe that you will go home again with your husband, thus they will be much more willing to grant you the visa. I would anticipate that you will get it without problems. Enjoy the vacation!! (PS. I guess in your family, your husband doesn't wear the pants.....at least while he is playing the bagpipes in full kilt, LOL)

Not correct. For certain countries, having USA permanent residence eliminates the need for a visa (i.e. a Peru citizen is required to have a visa to enter Mexico or Canada; a Peru citizen with a US GC does not need a visa).

Hmm, I was not sure how to interpret the colon and dash in the statement:

"Visa required, except for A stay of max. 180 days:

- for alien residents of the U.S.A. holding a Permanent

Resident/Resident Alien Card (Form I-551); "

But if you are correct, that is good news for us, because I was hoping to take Dora to Mexico, but thought I would have to hassle with a visa.

Thanks for pointing that out.

It means a GC holder only needs a visa if length of stay is more than 180 days.
