Living in AZ and going through this immigration stuff is what hurts the most. What sheriff Joe is dong (and what news doesn't say) is that he is rounding up possible illegals who fail to produce any form of ID. I think what he is doing is good.

Some people are falsely making it out like some sort of witch hunt.

Magistrate in our county said 70% of the people they charge with a misdemeanor or felony are Hispanic. Yet they only make up 6% of the population.

Now can you cite these statistics, or is more of the same made up numbers that you pull out of your #######?

Well I asked the Magistrate personally. The 6% is obtainable by means of a simple Google search.

Even if it was verifiable, that would not change anything. Many here like yourself ignore stats that go against the grain of your own personal views. As pointed out before - the statistics often aren't the problem (though when pulled out of thin air - they are pretty much useless), its the interpretation of them that is highly questionable.

Yes it would matter. As a matter of fact, I deal with crime statistics all the time and could quote them specifically. But we do not specifically track crimes commited by race. That is something that is done by outside agencies who obtain crime data and do their own analysis, so I seriously doubt that your magistrate was quoting any sort of statistic, more likely it was his opinon. I wouldn't have any problem had you said "It was the magistrates opinion that...........", but you didn't. Those saying that the sheriff targets people weren't trying to quote any sort of statistic or fact, merely opinion.

This whole walk on egg shells and beat around the bush regarding minorities and crime is why the country has such a huge crime problem. All good and well to specifically refer to race regarding achievements but an absolute taboo to do so regarding any negative activity. Unlike the identification of achievements by race, that latter is 'just being racist'.

as in a previous post, his reasons and justifications for probable cause were outrageous and biased, that's the reason why I at least dislike him... he's following a catch now ask questions later, with some ridiculous reasons as 'speech and dress patterns' that are enough reason to stop and detain someone who looks like the group they're targeting. What is so difficult to understand? What if he detains someone who looks like that group he's targeting, and it happens to be a legal resident, just an 'excuse me'? please.. you know Arpaio is doing the hardest he can to get in trouble.. Someone here even mentioned one of his raids, he detained 200 people, only 20 were illegal, what about the other 180? just a 'oh, my bad'?

Statistics 101: Correlation does not prove causation

There are many reasons why a particular minority group might be over represented in arrests, which have nothing to do with race or immigration status.

But of course, considering that, would weaken your point. So you ignore it and look stupid and keep hammering the point that you really can't prove in hope that someone might believe you.

You said that your magistrate quoted you those statistics. A magistrate is an authority, someone who should know those facts and you tried to pass it off as such. I seriously doubt you even got those numbers from them in the first place, but in the absence of any proof, i'll play along.
