:ranting: I'm trying to get my passport (first ever, not a renewal) and passport Canada is being a b****. I've looked up how Americans get a passport and their form is simple! Freaking Canada requires that I find a guarantor! The US doesn't even require that!

Oh, but just to make even MORE sense... If you're a Canadian abroad, you can use the mayor of any city as a guarantor (as long as he's known you for two years)... "Oh great, I'll ask our mayor, he's the one who married us!"... That'll work, right?... NOPE! That's for abroad! Canadians in the US get a special form THAT IS EXACTLY like the one for Canadians abroad, accept for the fact that MAYORS can't act as guarantor...

:bonk:

And that's when I had a psychotic episode, your honor.

Didn't they change the rules so your guarantor only needs to be a Canadian citizen that has ever held a passport? Surely there is someone back in Canada that knows you at least a little that holds a passport, no?I would call up some friends and family members and ask if they have one, then mail the form to them for signing. It would take a while but it would be done. And I agree, that is pretty stupid...

1. We have a VENT thread.

2. They've actually made it easier. Passport Canada allows any Canadian to be a guarantor, before you had to be within a certain cateogry to qualify as one such as a doctor. Do you not know 1 Canadian person? But I guess since you have been there illegally and now you want to file AOS, you can't go home to Canada to get your forms or your pictures guaranteed or you wouldn't be able to file. OR you can just send the forms to someone in Canada and have them send them back to you. Not that hard.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

The U.S. doesn't require that because for your first passport application you HAVE to show up in person. Now i'm sure that would be handy, if you lived in Canada and the U.S. consulate was just down the street - otherwise that would be a big hassle.

So when you first went to the US, you didn't have a passport?

Anyhoo - Treble's advice would resolve the issue..have a family memebr be the guarantor, won't that work? Just mail it back and forth

I have an aunt that use to have one, but it's expired. But now, I am so fed up with this passport business that if she accepts, I am going to pay for her renewal and have her act as my guarantor.

I know that there is a form that I can file out, if I can't find a guarantor, but I don't wanna go that route. Reason being that, my health card (the only picture ID I have) is expired, so someone over at Passport Canada said that I can use my Social Security Card (as long as it's signed, it is) instead. So, if I use the SSC AND file out that form, I'm afraid they'll deny it simply because my paperwork has too many "exceptions".

You could send your photos to a friend or family member back home and have them sign them for you. As long as they are a Canadian Citizen, are over 16 and have a passport....they can do it for you. It will take a couple of days to mail them back and forth, but it is doable!

Nope, no passport. It wasn't required. Heck, I had family members surprised that I even had to show ID... Then agian, they use to go the the US when NOTHING was required.

So, yup, going to have to go the family member route.

Actually, I think this is about hte only time I've ranting about anything. I think the passport process is retarded, not the immigration one. And I start a lot of thread because I'm a curious girl. The only dumb question is the one that isn't asked.
