I'm curious to know what draws people to small towns.

I'm just not sure what I would do with myself if I lived in a small town. Can someone enlighten me? The thought of a slower paced, simpler life intrigues me, but then my big city girl heart tells me I would just get bored. I guess I just love being accessibility to anything I want to do in a matter of minutes. That includes people, places and things.

Different things to do - Kitchener isn't all that small anymore, but 30 yrs ago when I was little, it was...I didn't know how much I valued a smaller city life until I moved and now live outside DC.

The slower pace is nice. It's nice to drive down the street and have 'Bill and Edna' wave to you. Some folks hate traffic, who wants to commute for an hour or 2 on the train or highway when you can drive to work in 5-10 minutes flat or on streets and roads that aren't packed with stupid drivers (they're everywhere). You're not a nobody ina big crowd

lately my husband is thinking we'll move to some small town...I'm all for it.

Mind you - everyone knows your business - 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other

Well there are lots of different kinds of small towns. There are small towns with 50 people where there isn't really anything to see or do or anyway to get around, then there are small towns with 50,000 people, which is the type of small town I'm used to. I found it to be a good mix of both worlds. Less people, things move slower, you can step back and breathe, but you can also get into your car and drive for 5 minutes and find a mall, or a movie threatre, or go see some friends. You could get in your car and drive 30 minutes to get to a bigger city where there's more going on. Its not like being in the heart of the action but you can always drive to the action! I just feel like smaller towns are a better place for me to relax and lay my head at the end of the day. Now a place with 50 people? That would be different. No way I could live in a place like that.

We would definately like to move to a small town. I don't care if everyone knows my business - I have nothing interesting to share on that front - so enjoy. Less traffic, easy access to everything, QUIET - I see a lot of benefits.

I have always lived in a big city - even our jaunt to 'small town' Lake Mary in Florida - wasn't - it's no small town, it's simply a suburb of Orlando.

The problem is employment, which i'm sure it is for everyone - small towns are not known for their huge job opportunities - so that's a down side. Sometimes I think we should just go ahead and move to a smaller place and just see how the work thing pans out. I would really like to move to BC, perhaps Victoria or Nanaimo.

I grew up and still live in north Toronto.. technically the GTA, outside of the TTC (transit) fare zone, which sort of svcks, transit up here just isn't that great. The city has gotten more and more overwhelming to me. But I grew up here. I love some of the architecture downtown, the islands, the annex, cabbagetown, the gay village, edwards gardens, pottery road (haha) and brickworks.. I like the green spaces right inside the city. I'm far enough away from it that I can go when I please, but not be flooded by it.

I hear Boston (where I'll be living hopefully by end of year  ) is pretty similar, in size (if you don't count the GTA 905 region), and green spaces, but Boston is more expensive and more competitive. And by the ocean :D

Well, I'm not from Toronto, but my fiance lives in Burlington, which is near Hamilton, and is commonly referred to by me as "SUBURBIA!" Lol. We spent quite a lot of time in Toronto, though.... well, at least at the ACC and a few random trips here and there. I think my favorite spot in the whole city, though, is Young and Dundas. (shoot me if I got that wrong...) I don't know why, but right in the heart of downtown, all the people and the fountains and stuff -- I'm from a city that's not even half the size of Toronto, so it's pretty awesome to me, lol. :)

As for Burlington, though... like I said -- suburbia! LOL.

Hey Trailmix...

I grew up in Nanaimo!

May I recommend Victoria? OR even ladysmith, Cinnabar Valley or even Port Alberni? Courtenay?

:)

I think you might LOVE The Sunshine Coast... that place epitomizes Lotus Land....

It's the armpit of the Island...

Ladysmith!!! Port Alberni, Ucluelet or Lantzville -- which is JUST outside of Nanaimo but 3 times prettier.

I lived in Nanaimo for 15 years... take my word for it -- it is the armpit of Lotus land...

:)

Why what's wrong with Nanaimo?? It's natures playground!!

Don't get me wrong -- the Island is freaking amazing it really is, I spent my whole young adult hood at Piper's Lagoon in Nanaimo -- nothing wrong with that. BUT... if you're going to haul butt to the Island, to somewhere where the beauty is already right there whereas Nanaimo, since it's a logging hub, you have to dig around a bit more to find said beauty...
