Hey guys,

I am 25 and Thu is 23. The other day we were discussion our potential living arrangement when she comes to live with my in Florida. I have been working full-time for 2 years since graduating from college in 2007. I decided last year when the economy went bad, to keep living with my parents until things get better. Thu knows I still live with my parents and she said that when she comes to Florida, she wants us both to continue to live with my parents. This seems to be accepted in VN culture according to her. My question becomes, would it look better to a potential CO if Thu and I state in our evidence that we want to live with my parents or would it look better if I got a place of my own?? My income is definitely high enough to support both of us so that is not an issue.

I stated that I still live with my parents and will continue living there until we find a house we both like. We are now getting ready to close on our house next month.

It's doesn't really matter as long as you meet the minimum for poverty guideline. It's also a good idea to describe well how your household is like and let her know what things are in the surrounding area as they might ask that during the interview.

Okay. That sounds good. You know come to think of it, if we live with my parents it may help our case more then if we lived alone. I guess it would make our relationship look more credible. Oh well at least now I know it won't hurt me. Thanks guys :)

All the paperwork is done and the funds are set... I just appointed someone in my family, the power of attorney to sign on the closing of my home, while I am over here.

Thanks....

Living with your parents will not be a problem, the main concern with them is that if you make enough money to support her and you. With that being met you should have no problem at all, accept for the privacy issue when she gets home :-)

Vietnamese are used to living with multiple generations under one roof...It won't be so much of a problem for her as it may be for you (except awkward moments...).

What I would recommend is you checking your affidavidt of support and making sure that this falls under the rules if you have a co-sponsor or not, etc...(including how many you support if it's under one roof, or if it's based on how many you are sponsoring/claiming on your taxes, etc...)

Don't assume it's "traditional" for them to live in in-laws houses because "it's a custom to do so". Lots of them will know and already know that they have lots more freedom once they get over here in the States and they WILL demand to have their own separate places. And if you're smart, try to avoid future potential conflicts between the mom in-law and the daughter in-law.

My point? try to gather your savings now and start thinking about getting a place of your own. You wanna get married and be a grown man right? Grown-up people don't live with the parents, at least most of them. Eventually, when you scrutinize your actual expenses, you'll realize it costs a lot, lot more compared to now, when you still live with your parents. When your money gets stretched, that's when your relationship with her will get tested. Some women will continue their journeys with you, for richer or poorer, some simply will find the new hosts that are willing to spend the $$$ they're seeking.

My 3.1459©

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!
