Why are there so many abandoned towns in Texas?

Mainly because of the decline in the small state highways. They were replaced with major interstates which skirted around the smaller towns, leaving them no future...

Well there is a way to remedy this. If America was to actually try to enter the 21st century and build rapid public transportation, these towns could be rejuvenated again and make living there a viable option. However, projects like that take vision. Unfortunately visions seems to be wholly consumed by military equipment and sport matches.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

The state of NJ said no to a much needed rehabilitation of a major highway here and said yes to a fucсing stadium instead.

Never mind that people driving to and from the stadium would use that highway that needs work....

I do think its odd that with the huge financial revenues that the US has (or rather had), that the infrastructure shouldn't be better. Clearly something is very wrong with that picture - trickle-down economics trickled into someone's fat pocket!

It's not even the roads. How many roads can you build? You need other viable 21st century options. Anyway, the roads they do build are not maintained in the US. Most roads are dilapidated, dirty, worn out, unmarked, etc. I now take pride that my taxes were used to clean weekly all of the streets and highways in Melbourne. Having someone visit from Aus here is honestly embarrassing. Worst of it all is that people here simply don't care. A long as someone is driving their range rover, all is well; which is laughable consider how crappy those vehicles are anyway.

Trickle down is a lie. It doesn't trickle down at all.

Correct. Potholes are acceptable as long as America has money to drop bombs on camels and blow Achmed's towel off.

That was obvious to me within a year of being here. Its the con (joke) of the century.

What good is having a military if you have nothing left worth protecting? If the terrorist jump on google streetview, they will laugh their heads off.

That route 22 still sucks though.

rt 22 is the highway that was up for rehab. specifically the section in somerset county, which due to all the jughandles and hidden exits/entrances is a safety nightmare...

And that is the problem. People compare the US to third world countries and think wow we are Aussie (aka awesome).

The best thing ever thought up of was Google Streetview. Those guys should win the Nobel prize. Have a look at France and Europe, the country many have made out to me dirt for so many years, then compare it to the US. Have a look at Canada and Australia, which are similar sized English speaking countries, and then compare it to the US. As you said about Windsor, what Australians would consider ghetto would actually be a nice middle class area here.

Vancouver.

At least their houses are also unique. Do new housing estates in Jersey also have the Vinyl siding craze that we have here? My favorite is the brick front, yet vinyl siding on the side and back. ####### ever happen to individuality and ingenuity? Mention this and it brings weird looks. Mention how the Steelers did and that is what excites people.

Well the part in Union is pretty awful - there are always accidents on there; and people veer across lanes without signalling.

Validates that survey from a while back about NJ drivers being the most dangerous.

Depends. The upscale developments don't have any vinyl at all. They are calling it the "European" look. I don't know what it is but it looks cool.

Here's an example (this is in warren, nj).

The lower-end, which are the national builders use vinyl on the side and brick in front or all vinyl.

It's also because builders are allowed to do as they please here. For me to build a home in AUS I have to meet both county and state planning regulations. I cannot just go build anything in a community. The county will deny cheap designs that will not add value to the neighborhood. Some housing estates here built in the last 10 years are absolutely atrocious. In 20 years they will be the new ghetto. All because there are no rules dictating the quality of the homes. Also why I hate HOA.

I am looking at building two new houses in Melbourne and move back once they are constructed. Just going through the preliminary planning stages now.
