i live in the US (kentucky) and my fiance lives in Canada (Toronto) and due to extreme situations she is going through at home I am going to have to get her an apartment. She currently doesn't have a job so I'm going to send her money. what is the best way to do this?

You could mail her a money order. I've mailed money orders from a US bank in Canadian dollars to Canada, they only charge about $5.

Alternatively, you could send her in US dollars and the Canadian bank will exchange it

Good luck.

If you wanna get it there fast...Western Union, if you got a day or so...you can use www.xoom.com and transfer it directly into her account or she can pick it up and one of their locations.

Xoom is much cheaper than Western Union but it usually takes a few hours.

You can use Custom House to transfer $$ electronically for no charge. Canadian banks also know how to handle international cheques (checks) so you could send her $$ that way. The only downside to that is if she doesn't have $$ in the bank to cover the cheque, they'll put a hold on it until it clears..... usually in about 3 business days.

Moving from K-1 Process to General Immigration Discussion.

Best way is to have a Chase bank account. Use that to wire transfer the funds. To do it you will need her banks " swift code", address of bank, her account number & some personal info for her. There is no charge for the service. The funds arrive in her account the same business day if her bank is open. This takes about 10 minutes at your bank branch.

The best way, if your bank will let you, is to send her an ATM card and let withdraw money. We did this for a while but then the bank cut it off, I understand some banks allow it. I could not add my fiancee to the account until she arrived here and went in person to the bank.

Other than that, moneygram is cheaper than Western Union. I do a lot of cross border business and have in th past. Any kind of check or money order is held by banks as a "foreign check" and can delay availability of funds for up to 20 days. I hate to mail cash, but any bank in Canada will exchange it for her, or she can just deposit it. The current exchnage is almost par (YAY...big boost for Northern Vermont!)

I have had great results using xoom. In my experiences, the deposits are available in just a few minutes at the ATM, not hours or days as some have said. Cost depends on the amount sent. 3-5 USD in most of my remittances. I send only online and from my account to hers. Best wishes

Your own bank, whatever it is, can do a wire transfer directly to her bank account, debited to your own account. Depending on the bank, the fee is zero to $25. Or, Wal-Mart has a money transfer desk using MoneyGram.

All of these suggestions will work, but Moneygram is about the cheapest and still well known. Also, they will automaticly convert the value to the receiving country's currency. You send the Moneygram and call her with the transaction number. When she goes to pick it up they will ask the transaction number annd if she knows it they will hand it over. Some places don't even require an ID. Any Walmart Supercenter will have Moneygram at the customer service desk. Western Union is much more expensive.

I am not certain all Wal-Marts in Canada do Moneygrams tho......I know the one in my neighbourhood does not. If you are in the Eastern part of the US Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has branches in several of the states there. You would be able to open an account there and have her open a US account in Canada. You would be able to transfer the funds between the 2. This will take a couple of days, so maybe not best for the immediate need, but something you could look into for future transfers.
