Hello,

I recently got married in India and filed for IR/CR-1.

I have a question: I don't plan to take my husband's last name so I am retaining my maiden name. I also didn't apply for addition of spouse's name to the biographic page since I wasn't sure how long they would take and I wanted to get started on the paperwork ASAP. Is this going to be a problem anywhere?

Any thoughts? Thanks!

There is no requirement in taking your spouse's last name, however about the biographic page if your passport was issued before your marriage then its cool, but if your passport was issued after your marriage I would suggest to upgrade your biographic page.

Also it takes only a week or so time to have your spouse's name in your biographic page. I never took my husband's last name but I did have his name on my passport, never had to deal with any questions regarding taking his last name.

On a totally different subject, I still think its stupid and totally out of line how women from Gujurat are being made to take spouse's last name at Indian Passport office, officers flat out deny issuing passport if they don't take up their SO's last name.

Okay, thanks for that. My passport was issued in 2002 and is valid till 2017. I got married two months ago, so I'm assuming it'll be fine.

I know, right? Man, it made me so mad when I read about Gujarati women on this forum somewhere. That is way out of line and I have no idea how they are getting away with directly contradicting a Supreme Court directive. Absolutely rubbish. If only they'd tried to do that here in Calcutta. I would have given them a right piece of my mind.

I would'nt worry about taking on your spouse's last name, it's not a requirement, and there really is no culture in India implying the wife should or should'nt. My wife did'nt, I never asked her, nor did she tell me she wanted to but lol along many of our long talks she did say she wanted to so i said oh well... too late, we'll figure it out when she gets here.

I would suggest updating the biographic page, that can also be used as then evidence you to are truly together, I mean why would you go through the hassle. But, yes, your right, how long will it take, India is not really a straight forward country, and can take a long time. If you don't update the biographic page, just plan on having a good justification for it.
