MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- Thousands flocked to Spain's capital Saturday to protest the Socialist government's move to make it easier to get an abortion.

The anti-abortion protest, themed "each life is important," began at 5 p.m. in central Madrid ... Local media estimated the crowd in the tens of thousands.

The protest was prompted by a proposed law that would ease restrictions on obtaining an abortion.

Since 1985, abortion has been decriminalized, but only in matters of rape, or when the health of the child or mother is at risk. Victims of rape can legally get an abortion until the 12th week of pregnancy, and women can opt for abortions until the 22nd week of pregnancy if doctors detect a malformation of the fetus.

Most abortions in Spain are performed when the woman's psychological or physical health is at risk.

...

The bill, soon to be debated in Parliament, would permit abortions through 14 weeks of pregnancy and set the legal age to obtain an abortion without parental consent at 16 years old.

Supporters say the bill includes the "voluntary interruption of pregnancy" as part of a broader national strategy on sexual and reproductive health, with education and access to contraceptives, aimed at preventing unwanted pregnancies.

I thought Europe was 'slipping' to the right? Perhaps Spain didn't get the memo?

Does this sound like a leftward movement to you MC?

The whole thing is a little puzzling, if there is such a feeeling of protecting the unborn and all that.... why is spain in a death spiral with one of the lowest birth rates?

Yes, that's a real enigma isn't it Danno

Oh, and Danno, I was referring to the elected government who represent the majority, not the protesters who, well don't ;)

Or maybe its that every country and 'culture' has different approaches to what constitutes sociopolitical right and left and the issues that use religious roots to deny or impose reproductive rights.

With your slippery slope its impossible to get firm footing.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Put down the Wine Hal... not every point is based on the "slippery slope" angle, in fact it was never even raised at all.

I'm not surprised you don't understand the meaning of the concept.

A hint would be for you to read your first post in this thread.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
