Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone out there had any problems obtaining a ssn in VA.

I went yesterday with my fiance and two children....aged 13 and 15.

I handed the SS-5 application forms and our passports over containing the k-1 and k-2 visa's and the I-95 which was stapled into each of our three passports, the lady behind the counter said we needed work authorisation documents before she could issue us with ssn, to say i was dumb founded would be an understatement as i had never heard of this before.

So we came home as she said there was nothing she could do without these documents.

We called immigration this am to clarify this and they said the same, i was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas, as to which step to take next as it seems i cant do anything without this document and as my children are 13 and 15 i didn't think they needed work authorisation documents.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated as i'm at a loss as to what to do next to sort this

K-2s need an EAD card or I-551 stamp or card to be assigned a work authorized SSN. Unless you want to spring for the EAD cards, I suggest that you apply for ITINs with IRS until they are eligible to be assigned an SSN.

The K-1 is another matter and she is eligible for a work authorized SSN based on the K-1 status as long as she hasn't been here over 76 days. After 76 days she also needs an EAD card or I-551 stamp or card.

BTW it's I-94, I-95 is a highway. LOL

admission.

The following lists nonimmigrants, by alien classification, who are

authorized to work in the U.S. without specific authorization from DHS.

The alien's I-94 will not have the DHS employment authorization stamp

and the alien will not have an EAD.
