Birth certificate NVC

Hi all, I have a question with regard to birth certificates and filing. I anticipate filing for a CR -1 visa in the very near future. I would be the beneficiary. My birth certificate is written in Italian. When the time comes to file and the process takes me to the NVC submissions of documents, am I to understand that I would be required to have my Italian birth certificate officially translated and certified or would the original document suffice?

That's the only document I have that is not in English.

Also what documents can one send the NVC that can be copies or certified copies? I know they want some original documents as does the US consulate in my country at the time of the interview.

For the BC it has to be in English or the language of the country your interview will take place in. The same goes for the marriage certificate, and etc.

All docs submitted to NVC has to be originals or certified copies, BC, Marriage certifacte, Military record if needed, etc.Except for the biographical page of the beneficiarys passport, that can be photo copies.

Be careful for the BC, you need to have a certified translator. There are some requirements (that I don't remember off hands).

You can get a list of translators from the embassy!!!

Thanks. Is there some special criteria around the translator being certified or does the translated copy need to be certified and where the heck can I get this done. I'm in British Columbia? And would I send both copies ie original and translated? Always something...

Hi and welcome - btw the translation does not generally need to be done by a 'certified translator' - the instructions are below - yes, send both the original and the translation:

Hey Trailmix and thanks ! This site rocks !! I'll have to see what the Montreal consulate can offer in terms of pointing me in the right direction with translators... also I hate the idea of sending original documents because of the stories I read about documents and entire packages being lost. It was a bit of a deal to get my BC from Italy as it was so I'd hate to have to do that again.

Anyone know any good translators that can do Italiano ???

I thought anyone can translate as long as they certify that they're proficient in that language. My hubby's coworker did his translation. Also, I've seen posts from VJers stating that they (as beneficiary) translated documents themselves with no problem. If I'm wrong, I'll be getting an RFE!

When I look at my BC it's pretty clear re t he names on it, date of birth, city etc but the rest of the fine print is Italian. Didn't think of doing it myself hmmmmmm lol

Hey guys, well I've found the Italian consulate in Vancouver to be not as helpful overall in recent past dealings. I didn't think to ask to have the BC printed in English, not realizing they can do that. I've been looking on line and found many different translators as well.

I may see if a relative in "the old country" lol may be able to help out by either getting me another one in English ... thnx for the reply !!

Finn, I did 2 of my husbands docs, and we were fine!!, and my french stinks!!!!
