According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

As mentioned above, Aus is a totally different ball game. Even then, there is a significant change for the worse in the culture of the youth. Just nowhere near as bad as the US.

PS I have traveled (travel) all over the country. Part of the job

No offense to Australia, but this is because it has always been behind the US on these sorts of developments. Unless you learn from our mistakes, you will become worse than we are today, and from what I've read and heard about the PC culture in Australia, you are on the luge barreling down.

As a teacher in a school district where just about EVERY child who is not in the lowest socio-economic class is in a private or parochial school, I speak from experience of working in a distilled version of the "social experiment." I'm the FIRST to say that many of the changes intended to "protect" students, etc., have done more harm to those very students as well as the entire school system than good, but I also have to say that the 2008 comparison is very exaggerated. The priniciples that the exaggerations are meant to highlight are accurate, however.

The lowest socio-economic class is not better off than it was several generations ago. In fact, in terms of the social divide, it is worse off. Socialists would claim that this is because of greedy capitalists, but that is not only intellectually dishonest, it is irresponsible. Meanwhile, as a result of political correctness and such attitudes the values that promote success in that class have been almost completely destroyed. It is criminal the way we have crippled our fellow citizens in this way. We have made them dependents. No wonder they are so angry.

OF COURSE we needed to make changes in various aspects of our culture. And I'm a supporter of "midnight basketball" and those sorts of programs. The mistake is in the "entitlement" mentality. Entitlements become the chain that enslaves.

The first step we need to take to begin to fix what is wrong with schools is to stop focusing so much on bad teachers (yes, they exist, but at this point in time their impact is negligible because other issues override any impact they can make positive or negative) and start focusing on the reason we, as the public, provide public education. It is not because "every child has a right to an education." It is because we need an educated populace. If we look at it this way, we would have to hold parents and students responsible for behavior that disrupts learning. Teachers would not have to worry so much about tap-dancing around behavior problems. They would be able to eject students who are getting in the way of the tax-payers' investment in an educated population. They would have more time to teach. When students are not performing because they are lazy or have a bad attitude, they could be threatened with ejection.

We would still need intervention programs and special education programs, but once we shifted our mission and our goal from protecting the individual's right to an education to protecting the tax-payer's right to an educated voting population and workforce, everything else would fall in line.

There are so many reasons why stuff in the 50s and the 90s+ needs to be different. Inter-racial social activities, etc...

Back in the 50s, it was mainly all white. Whitey this, whitey that...Those who favor time like those in the 50s can also probably considered racist and sexist. (Sorry Brokieyedgrl)

Its ok i didnt write it ( ive always have many races as friends, now i cant help the fact i see men as slower ha) but its kinda true for my parents for that time, schools were seperated and my dad did rule with my mom staying home.

Kids back then found fun in playing outside and riding their bikes, now they sit in front of the tv playing games and getting fat....back then if you got in trouble in school you really got in trouble when u got home, now when you get home the parents turn it around and it becomes someone elses fault, (if the school or child even tell you) kids ate alot of soap, now its the parents (+tv and moves) they learn it from.

Kids skip today the parents have to pay a fine, most knew how to keep their butts from showing with their jeans, respect was respect.

Those kids from that era learned those ways then they became parents, some tried to continue with the rules of past but with the (new times) the next generation made changes, then the next made more changes until we have today. Fifty yeras from now they will look back and say the same looking at these times as better because of...(yet to be seen)
