I didn't know what Loma Prieta was but then again I didn't live near California.

I was in my 2nd month of my first post-college job. I was sent to a client that day and at 5pm was 10 floors up in a 28 floor building in downtown SF - it was on rollers and it rolled. I jumped under the desk and knew it was a big one.

Couldn't get home to Oakland that night, luckily had a candle light evening in SF with a new man I was dating - finally got a hold of my dad in Southern Cal and for one of the few times in my life heard him swear when he heard my voice - "oh ###### you're alive". He had seen all the destruction on the news and I was experiencing a power outage :)

The Cypress freeway collapse was creepy!

I was in the National Guard at the time. We spend a week on the border of Alameda NAS building a parking lot and putting in a ferry terminal so that commuters could get across the bay to San Francisco. A few of us took a boat ride into the bay one Sunday afternoon. It was interesting to look up as we passed under the Bay Bridge, and see a section missing. For some reason, I wasn't feeling the aftershocks, but all the earthquake virgins were noticing every pop and shift in the ground.

I was up in Santa Rosa when it hit. I did feel a quick jolt, and heard a loud bang, but didn't think anything of it, until I noticed the power off at the gas station next to my work, and everybody yelling, "Did you feel that?"
