On AOS Forms Do I use my wife's maiden name or new last name

Hi All,

My wife came here as my fiance on a K-1 Visa. We got married and in the process put down that she would be using my last name. We haven't done any official changes since then, but she uses my last name for all documents. In filling out the I-485 and other documents, do I use my wife's maiden name or her new last name (my last name) when asked for "family name"?

If your wife wishes to use your family name now she is married to you, then she should complete all the forms with her new last name. There is places on the forms for "OTHER NAMES USED" that is where she will have to list her maiden name.

If you use her maiden name on the forms then her greencard will be issued in her maiden name and you would have to pay to have the card changed or have to wait until you are lifting the conditions to do it for free. Much better to do it now.

I agree with Tay. If your wife wishes to adopt your name, it is best to do it now and get it onto official documents and ID cards.

I applied for everything in my new name and eventually I will have a GC in the new name to go alongside my new EAD card and AP card.

Quick question. What about middle name? I notice that the forms ask for my middle name a lot. The thing is, I DO have one, but in Quebec, Canada, middle names are barely use. I don't even have it on my IDs.

If I put it down in the forms, will it appear on the GC?
