Able to Work without EAD??

How come she has a SSN? Because one of the requirements in filing/having SSN is the EAD? Am I right? You have to prove the SS Office that you have papers, showing them that you can work here in USA?

In terms of the SSN and needing it to get married, I know that it's still Alaskan law (and I live up here) to get one before you can get married. My hubby and I were going to get married up here and were filling out an application (where it was required), but because we needed to go to San Antonio, we got married there instead. The Bexar County in Texas has it as an optional, but I was able to give them an SSN anyhow. I was, however, not allowed to work until I got my EAD.

Additionally, I've been told by other members of the site (who have also been through the process) that you can get an SSN as a K-1 immigrant within two weeks of arrival in the US. I applied for mine immidately (upon arrival here) and had it within a few weeks of coming here to the US.

I have read in other places that it is possible to work without an EAD? since on the I-9 form that employers fill it out, a valid combination would be a foreign passport + valid I-94 + SS number ? But it also said that it depends on the employer....... i was wondering could she possibly find a job and use the SS and I-94 and tell the employer the EAD is processing? anyone with experience with this?

Better file AOS and wait for EAD approval before working. Working illegally might give you problem in your green card approval.

It always amazes me that after all the aggravation and expense to get here people can't wait two or three months for an EAD card. Makes wonder sometimes, did they come here to get married or work.

Meh, situations change for people. Unemployment can easily rear its ugly head at any point in this time and age, its no wonder so many people are desperate.

It's more that I don't like sitting around while my hubby does all the work...I'd rather be contributing and helping out (other than general stuff for the house), getting a vehicle, and getting our lives going. I don't believe in one person working while the other stays home. The pressure will be off him and then, while we'll be careful with our spending, we can relax a little. But, like Sousuke said, situations can change for people. With jobs, to some extent, you get a sense of financial security.
