thanks to those of you who provided legit responses.

we're a little restricted by my remaining vacation time, so we only have about 8 days.

we are interested in checking out some of the local fare, wineries if they're in the area, brew pubs.

some websites i've seen have recommended bike tours of the city, sydney harbor, the rocks, manly and palm beaches (how's the weather in mid november?)

as far as the sheep goes - ummmmmm, thanks for the tip.....we'll pass

on a serious note, i can tell you to watch out for jackjumpers, cane toads, and anything that vaguely resembles a spider or snake.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Melbourne is love. I miss living there every day. (L)

Not a big fan of Sydney, nice for a day or two to see the sights, but not a vacation spot for me. One of the nicest things to do for me was to walk from Bondi Beach to Cogee Bay (on the coastline), going past Tamarama & Bronte Bay and walking past the old cementary between Bronte and Clovelly Bay. A beautiful thing to do on a sunny day. The walk back and forth is about 6 miles, so it's not too far.

As for vegemite, it's goodness in a jar. You thinly spread it on buttered toast/ bread. It's a yeast based product, actually the residue produced when beer ferments. Best thing to do is to top it with cheese and broil it for a few minutes until the cheese melts! Try the cheesymite scroll at Bakers Delight for an easy vegemite start.

i agree. i am from melbourne but have lived in both melbourne and sydney and both are lovely, but melbourne is more arty and has cute laneways with awesome shopping and a great cafe and food scene.

if you want to stay in sydney though, it is also lovely. go to palm beach, bondi beach, go to manly, see the markets (paddington market is great), go to darling harbour, there are some great bars - one in particular is cargo bar, and its fairly cheap too, but awesome meals, go to see the taronga zoo, its an amazing view of the harbour too when you go on the zoo chair lifts, and you can catch the ferry there from circular quay, then go back for a drink and dinner at the opera bar, which is underneath the opera house. i also know a girl named Katie who is an event manager at the opera house, tell her you know "Tiny Donna" (she will know me) and she will let you in for a tour of the opera house if she is working. just go to the front desk.

pm me if you want any more info.

also, you have to go look at the botanical gardens in sydney and go to surry hills. its just gorgeous there... and again, good cheap food and lovely people. lots of cute stores with jewelry and artwork and fun stuff.

good luck xox. australia really is a beautiful place. but think about melbourne koz its only a $89 or so flight from syd to melb and if you come to melb i can definitely tell you good things to do!! :D

real funny.. not. i can safely say after living here my whole life, never seen any of the above, apart from in ZOOS!

oh one more thing, the weather is pretty warm this time of year, and mid november should be great for seeing the beaches.

umm yeah, i read a couple of posts, and i still don't find it funny, or "get" it.

what makes you all think it's ok to make out that Australians are idiots or something? i might be a wet blanket or whatever you want to call it, but i'm moving to the US from Australia, to be with my American husband who i love, and i have loved living in Australia all my life but am also embracing the US and the culture there etc..., and i don't know how many times i have stood up for him or supported him when people make fun of America, or say stupid ###### that isn't true.. and then i hear ###### like what goes on here, and it just makes me mad.

i don't "get" it and i don't think it's funny. i don't know, maybe i am totally missing the point and you'll all just have a nice laugh about it, but quite frankly, i don't think it's nice.

thanks for your info!! i can't wait to go! 8 days probably won't even begin to scratch the surface, though.

and i agree - the poor attempts at humor and belittling the other side reflect on the individuals - not the cultures. i'm glad you're wise enough to filter out the b.s. - just do yourself a favor and stay away from the kiddie table.
