She is not required to be a relative, does not have to live with you. She only needs to be a domiciled US Citizen and financially make 125% above the US poverty guidelines.

Yes, she needs to fill out the I-864, just as you did.

I agree with k.loveh. The directions on page 3 of the I-864 state: "A joint sponsor does not have to be related to the petitioning sponsor or the intending immigrant." The co-signer's relationship to the beneficiary and petitioner does not matter. The only thing that matters is that make over 125% or over 100% if they are in the military.

Maybe this is already assumed, but I wanted to just make a comment. My cousin had similar situation like you. Her income was not enuf so she got her friend to sponser her parents. However, at interview time, consulate asked for the co-sponsor's tax return. So, be sure to have co-sponsor fill out I-864 along with supporting evidence of income such as employment letter, pay stubs, tax returns, etc.

I know it's not required that the joint sponsor be related to the petitioner but I have a different question. My joint sponsor is my (the intending immigrant's) cousin. Not my USC husband's. That's not going to be a problem, right? Logic tells me that as long as the cousin is a USC and makes more than the required amount it shouldn't be an issue who he is related to. We'd have gone with his parents but my father-in-law is in between jobs currently and I was under the impression that the joint sponsor must be currently employed. So we went with the next best option, my naturalized USC cousin who works in the government.
