If I remember correctly, doesn't packet 3 have the interview letter with the interview date on it so that you can go get the medical exam before the interview?

Congrats on your case making it to the Consulate in HCMC.

Nope. That letter comes with packet 4.

Phuong sent off her DS-230's and DS-2001 on October 7th, so we're hoping to get packet 4 soon. Packet 3 took three weeks to arrive, so I emailed the consulate today hoping for a firm date. I need to reserve vacation time and book airline tickets, so the more advance notice I have, the better it will be. I expect her interview will be sometime in December.

He is right. It is Packet 4. The US Consulate will NOT schedule an interview until the fiance has returned a SIGNED DS-2001 interview readiness form (I think that is what they are called) usually about 1-2 months after they receive it. Some have been sooner.

It's been a while, I forget what comes with which packet... Good Luck Mr. Jim on your fiancee's upcoming interview. (not that you would need it since you and your fiancee are probably one of the most informed people going through hcmc during this time period  )

Thanks. I've been obsessive about being prepared for this, but we've still got a lot of hurdles to overcome, and there's a limit to how prepared you can be for these even if you know everything there is to know about them. Our case has plenty of red flags. We're both divorced, though in both cases the divorce was several years before we met each other. She has quite a few family members in the US, most living within 50 miles of me. I've met nearly all of them, but most after she and I were introduced. We were also introduced by one of those relatives, but it was after I'd known him for several years. She also lives in Hue - the highest fraud province in Vietnam, I've been told.

Anyway, we've addressed these things as best as we could in the petition, but the consulate could easily focus on any one of them to issue a blue slip. I included both a timeline and a list of relatives with the petition, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to get a blue slip asking for both of them. We can deal with a blue slip, or even AP. We're both old enough that we can be patient. What would be difficult to deal with is an outright denial and petition returned to USCIS. The CR1 is not an attractive option for us because her kids are 19 and 17 (almost 18). They are only eligible as derivatives of a K1. If they don't come with her then it would be an emotional strain on her, on top of which they would have to live with her mother until we can get separate visas for them. Her mother is 73, and already has her hands full with her brother's wife and kids living there.

Jim,

If you call DoS they will tell you when the appt is... that way you wont have to wait for pkt 4 to know.... Likely first week in Dec with Doug...

Oh yeah! I remember for CR-1 Cases you can call NVC and they will know your interview date. I don't know if it's the same for K1 cases but you can try calling NVC.

Got a reply to my email today. Not bad - only three days!

Unfortunately, no news:

Dear Mr. xxx:

Thank you for your inquiry. We have already received the beneficiary's completed DS-230 Part I. Our office will schedule an appointment at the earliest opportunity. Once a visa interview appointment has been set, we will notify the beneficiary by mail. Please contact us at the end of each month for further information about the appointment date.

This was after I explained how slow the mail service had been in delivering packet 3, and how I wanted to get enough advance notice to arrange for time off from work, book airline tickets, etc.

I'll send another email at the end of the month, as they suggest. They'll probably just repeat the message above. When I contact them at the end of November they'll probably say "Your interview is next week. Didn't you get the letter?".

Jim,

Call DoS as they are on the same computer system as the consulate and if an appt is set they can tell you the date... the earlier you know the date the better since flights then are going up every week.... at least the 1 way return flights are at a stable price now...
