Happiness to me is a clear sky, turquoise seas, a gin and tonic and enough money to make it all last.

How about Bombay Sapphire?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Canada sounded good (and still does) for practical reasons. In my dreams, I'd rather be on Grand Bahama Island.

Have you seen Australia's Islands?

No this seems great compared to places like Finland. We want a majority of things handled by the individual and private sector and I believe that type of thinking is one of the things to be credited to the success of america. You should of married a woman from Europe because were a different breed over here and I dont every see you being happy living here. ;)

Oh dear, I think you did say what you thought he should have done and couched it in racial terms, thus proving what I said all along, to you happiness is synomonous with living under a very specific and unchanging political regime ;)

Well from the assumptions your making I think its obvious you dont know me at all, I have explained to you where I am coming from in every way I can and yet you continue to want to paint me as a neandrathal. I will leave you to your distorted view of reality.

When you feel resistance you need to pull the Q tip out. ;)

Too far. GBI is a short flight from the US east coast, which is still where most of my loved ones reside.

Speaking of flights. I just love catching a flight from here, especially with their great modern planes and young friendly crew. Service is second to none. The meals you get on a flight are Wolfgang Puck grade. Most of the times I have to send the seconds back. Did I forget to mention the nice modern airports and so much do to while waiting. Restaurants, shops, and cafes. You name it! My favorite part is the lounges. Who wants ####### like the free decent appetizers, which depend on the part of the day (breakfast / lunch or dinner) or the open bar in ultra modern lounges overseas. We get pretzels and one soda at AA. Beat that! Modern airports are for losers anyway. I prefer LAX international from the 80's or Dulles from the 70's, they're character. Flying on the new A380 is also getting boring, considering every airline here owns so many of them.

Is stating this being anti-American? Don't want to get in any more trouble here.

Just look at this ####### on Emirates. Hideous. The need to fly Delta.

I fail to see how your reply actually replies to the post it's purportedly replying to.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Hands down, in terms of telecommunications (broadband, cell, internet), the private industry has served Americans very well and offers services well ahead of those abroad. Not to mention the similar success and quality of service it has delivered to the aviation industry.

So it's just random?

You mentioned flying so I used this opening to discuss how private companies screwed the US aviation industry, all in a name of a profit. I also mentioned broadband considering that is the OP. Here is an example I posted yesterday regarding mobile broadband:

------

I just bought a netbook. AT&T is charging $60 for 5 gig of data or $40 for 200mb. Plus taxes of course; which is another con and will be $6 bucks.

International carriers:

Three in Aus = $13.50 for 1 gig or $26.10 for a 3 gig. More than enough for my netbook. ++ Prices are in USD and include all fess and taxes. Thank you government regulation.

Three in UK = $16.33 for 1 gig or $24.50 for 15 gig (yes 15 gig). ++ Price already includes taxes and fees.

------

Or is quoting these being anti-American?

you're conservative??? that's LAUGHABLE. look at your comments. you toe the line with the leftest of the left. i don't even think you can see the center from there!!

and to back Simpson's statement, if my SO trashed my country as much as BY trashes his SO's country, that would be a deal breaker for me. regardless of the positives and negatives of this nation, it is my home. wherever i go, it will be a part of me, just as it is for BY's SO. to spit on it the way BY does is to disrespect the very person whom he's pledged to share his life with.

and don't come back with this "ohh, i loooove america; don't get me wrong; blah blah blah" your track record is clear.

Well not the American definition. The country seems to have its own 'unique' definition on everything. Doing so is as American as it gets. For example, labelling a sport that only Americans participate and play as being 'world series' etc.

Trashing? I thought yanks were supposed to be strong and tough, all about being first and the best. The irony is that the US is one of few industrialized nations that places such a huge emphasis on this winner takes all attitude. My my how this attitude changes the second you are beaten. Then it's a case of who cares to flat out denial and eventually hatred and even mocking the leader. Unlike you guys, we are not indoctrinated to love a country just because I was born there. A country has to give me a reason to love it, to promote it, to stand up for it and to cherish it. Something Australia has done.

Takes this thread for example, I have one broadband provider comcast in my area; whereas, I had over 30 in Melbourne. Or is pointing this out hating on America too? Thank God Dems are staring to wake up and see past the smoke screen. The Dems have at least acknowledged that others that are beating the US, as in better than you, at doing various things. Only fools refuse to learn from their competitors, not to mention insist that they are better. Like it or not, China is coming and using their Federalist Communist government to outdo the US. I cannot wait to hear the excuses once a country that has polar opposite views on the economy and government overtakes you. Oh wait, Repubs will just deny it.

You know what, at the end of the day it's Americans like yourself who will lose. Not Australians, nor Europeans or even Asians etc. As stated by another poster, the country will end up with a top 15%and most things will end up being developed and manufactured overseas. Repubs have already damaged the country with the undeviating pursuit of Reaganomics. An approach that will not work in this crisis.

are you living in a city that is comparable in size to Melbourne? if so, then i'm calling shenanigans. there is not one city in America with a population of >50k that does not have at least 5 mobile carriers and/or broadband providers. according to wiki, Melbourne's population is estimated at ~4 mil. that makes it larger than L.A. so unless you live in Chicago, L.A., or N.Y., comparing melbourne to a city of 500k is apples and oranges.

and now you're telling me that the dems are the champions of competition??? the very same people who are attempting to unleash a monstrous health care bill that will ultimately create a single payer system and eliminate all competition in the health industry???

Americans succeed despite the government, not because of it. our winner-take-all attitude has been a source of human progress and innovation from the day this country was formed. there's a reason why the U.S. has over 300 Nobel prize winners, while Australia has 10 (not a typo - that's it). and it's probably because they didn't sit around pissing and moaning about not getting enough time off or how someone else earned more money or how there's not enough choice in broadband providers.
