I'm not sure who's fault it is...I'm just saying that it appears to be the way things happen and it's not really the fault of any one in particular.

There is another one, actually, that many people say wrong...I hear a lot people say imparticular and have even seen people spell it like that. I don't know who to blame...the teachers?

If I ever have kids, and hear one of his/her teachers using "irregardless", I will pull my child out of that school so fast their head will spin. I will not stand for any child of mine using that term!!! Irregardless is an american incarnation, I can sadly say that it is our fault. I get irrationally upset about people using that term like some in this forum do about HFCS.

Oh dude - you will have teachers who can't spell. who talk like valley girls (because they're like only 25 themselve you know.... trust me, you'll see it all. I grew up with 2 parents who were teachers from the previous generation and they are amazed at what passes for a teacher these days.

Sometimes kids can't help it. My son mispronounces a lot of words and actually it's part of a speech problem he has. He has a hard time with past tense. They worked on it up until grade 3 and then they stopped caring about it. It was like: "Okay we've done what we can... we only work with this issue in grade 3 and now he's on his own"

I have to pay an outside person to work with him once a week to keep him on track with his pronunciations. If I didn't pay someone to work with him once a week, he'd still be walking around and saying: "Yours is bettered than mine" or my old personal favorite: "I doned it good"

Stuff like that.

(because they're like only 25 themselve you know.... trust me, you'll see it all.

Udella, you know I love ya, but I can't accept this. I'm 25 and I surely don't talk like a valley girl, nor do I know any friend or acquaintance that does.

Also, the new class of teachers is more educated now than ever before. It's amazing to me how many programs and how much specialized assistance they offer at school now, even from when I attended. There were a lot of teachers I had growing up that finished Grade 12, had a year of teachers college, then were teachers! I knew myself at 19, can't believe I would have been able to essentially become a full time teacher before I was 20.

I don't think age has anything to do with the grasp on grammar or the proper definitions of words...there are all kinds of factors involved.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

It's true. My son's third grade teacher used to spell "Proud" as "Prowd" etc.

I am now older than most of my sons teachers.

You know what's awkward? Going out to a bar and seeing your sons first grade teacher wasted and dancing like a moron.

Exactly. And you are great enough to provide him with that help...most people probably wouldn't and then the child never learns properly.

Teachers at school have to move on and teach the curriculum, and they just leave a lot of things in the background.

I remember having a hard time with punctuation in grade 9 English and thinking "Did I miss a couple lessons somewhere?"..and I was a super good student.

I said irregardless on a date once (I think I was 20). He corrected me. That was the end of that (the date, and the use of the non-word).

I love when dates provide the short-and-sweet means of determining whether you will see them again. It cuts down on so much wasted time. lol

OK, I know i'm an as$hole, but even I wouldn't correct someone I was out on a date with. :bonk:

LoL, there are Valley Girls still around? They originated in the valley in L.A. and were irritating in the 80's, but I thought they had all gone away. I guess they just migrated to NJ and DC

I was a teacher, and all the teachers where I taught were strict when it came to proper usage and sentence structure, especially the older teachers. I have no idea what leads to people butchering the english language, but I can only guess that people will somehow find a way to blame both the U.S. and parents of the offenders.

Smiles, Amy (L)

so I tell you, Valley culture is still alive

I KNEW there would be an opportunity for me in this thread.

I blame both the U.S. and the parents of the offenders (the American parents).

There :)
