mawilson is smart.

Prove it.

He's a quant for chrissakes. Never question a quant.

We've got a research department full of them. Backtesting their models all day long against the historical datasets we're so busily squirreling away.

I question them all the time. "Prove this ####### is worth the effort we invest in processing and storage costs we're incurring!" They love it.

The Fed, as an organ of monetary policy, doesn't have an official position on the dollar or exchange rates.

The Treasury secretary does. Here's a recent statement on the subject, continuing to reiterate a "strong dollar" outlook, as reported in the Chinese business press:

It's unlikely a sitting U.S. Treasury Secretary would undermine the U.S. dollar by talking it down but the effect of the administration policies have done just that.

"Despite the dollar's recent decline, Bernanke avoided currency-related remarks favoring instead to explore the technical aspects of the central bank's strategy of normalizing policy with a sizeable balance sheet. That kind of abstention is a long-held tradition in Washington. Interest rates play a significant role in the dollar's strength, but a tacit agreement leaves official commentary on dollar policy in the hands of U.S. Treasury Department, and rate policy with the Fed. Even so, it's difficult to imagine Bernanke unaware of how his words would be taken, given the context of the dollar's prominent slide this week."

As far as your Chinese sources go does anyone remember the Chinese laughing at Geithner?

""Chinese assets are very safe," Geithner said in response to a question after a speech at Peking University, where he studied Chinese as a student in the 1980s.

"His answer drew loud laughter from his student audience, reflecting scepticism in China about the wisdom of a developing country accumulating a vast stockpile of foreign reserves instead of spending the money to raise living standards at home."

Secession may not be all that bad. Key will be to make sure the crazies don't control the process.

Nope. The direction is the other way. You will see unrestricted travel between North American countries before you see any sort of organized armed rebellion. Gang violence is much more prevalent, and destructive, to the American dream, than the rantings of a few gun nuts on a weekend drunk. Check out some of that MSNBC Lock-up, to see where the real threats are.

Not to mention the gangland show on the history channel. That is pretty bad.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
