We just found out on Monday Finesse so I have made an appointment with an audiologist. His teacher is great and is really helping out any way he can as well. He told me that he got sick in Jamaica with the flu or some type of sickness and his ears plugged up and never unplugged. So maybe if he gets tubes or something some of the hearing can come back. We will have to see what the doctor says.

may just be an easy fix then....

question (not directed at dillon)....where are the good schools in jamaica? everyone on this board who has commented about a stepchilds progress has stated that they are academically behind...what is the reason for this?

Sometimes its not the school. Its the parents and the rules they set. Evrybody thinks its cute when the child knows all the dutty songs dem.

finess seet deh... some people say it's not the parents fault because they were not guided themselves...so where do we start...my parents didn't have guidance and they didn't finish school...that's why they made sure we did our best...me know seh mi naw go get my dinner until I'm done with my homework and house chores...some people might say that's harsh...but...it no kill mi...seet deh mi here and mi glad seh my grandmother wakkle mi baxide every now n den if mi step ottah line.

I think a big part of it is definitely the at home influence - When DJ's son was living with DJ's mom / sister, he knew all his multiplication tables at age 5 - He went to the other grandmother, and forgot them all - there was no reinforcement of what he learned in school.

sus I had to learn the entire table from pre school we had to say it every morning lawd ow mi remember it

1 times 1 is 1

1 times 2 is 2

It was like a song in my head...when I came to the states and saw that the kids didn't know it at age 8 I was in disbelief...they would have beat me in school and I would have been ashmed if I didn't know it. I was so afraid of having to wear the dunce hat and sit on the stool in the corner at school.

I had to break it down for Ray last week. He doesn't understand how people in Jamaica drop out of high school and still can't read and americans drop out of high school and can read and spell just about every word.

I know I haven't posted much lately so let me tell you what is going on in my world.

Things have been going pretty good at home with everyone getting along. Every now and then someones feelings get hurt because they aren't getting enough attention but it is a quick fix.

My step-son has been having problems adjusting to school and his school work. He is very far behind in his reading, writing and math skills which came to a shock to me. He is in 4th grade but reading at a 2nd grade level. The school he is in now tested his hearing and come to find out he has some hearing loss and is having problems hearing. He has said that it has been going on for at least a year and the loss is in both ears. His mother thought that there was nothing seriously wrong since he stopped complaining about it. :bonk: So we have a long road ahead of us with getting him caught up. He is getting extra help in school and we work with him as much as we can at home and he has a great attitude towards learning.

I was just shocked that his school doesn't do hearing tests like they do here...maybe some of the hearing loss could have been prevented if they did.

Dillon I found the same problem with my step-son. When I was in JA in June we had him for a week. One day we were in the car going to Negril and he was singing Vybz Kartel all day. He already has a problem with his speech so you know singing was wrecking my nerve. My daughters and his dad thought it was funny but I did not. I told him I hope he knows his school work like he knows that song. So I said spelling time. I gave him some spelling words a and was Shock that he could not spell Cat, Mat, Bat, Rat, Sat etc. I ask his dad why he do not know to spell these words and he said his mother sends him to school. Well I said sending him to school is not the problem when he gets home someone needs to check his H/W and give him some spelling test. I am a real stickler for school work. Now I have his dad calling him everyday and giving him spelling test over the phone. I told him when he gets here its going to really different he will have bed time, reading hour and less TV during the week.

I’m a stickler for school work too. My kids are not allowed to play their X-box DS or be on the computer unless its school work related during the week. I just think if they know they can play those games they’ll pay less attention to their homework. This year I allowed my 13 year old son to play his game during the week. I’m waiting for the first report period. If his grades have even slightly dropped I’m going back to my old rules. I didn’t want to allow him this new luxury but people were telling me I need to ease up some and let him make responsible choices. I hope for his sake they are right.

yesterday I was talking to Sunny and my son was like look mommy I can write in "cursin" I'm like what...I can write in "cursin" mommy...I said no baby boy it's cursive...but in jamaica we call it JOINUP

You'd be surprised Finesse. It actually happens..... Ray graduated and still has a hard time reading and spelling several words. He's slow reader also, but he's getting better everyday because I make him read everything.

They spell words just as they sound but they are not right....

finesse I went to a VERY good school in Jamaica, but that was in the 70s and my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles my family made sure my brother and I did our school work, they didn't play...I enjoyed my childhood, but I also knew that school was very important and not play time.

When I came to the US I was 2 grades ahead of children in my age group, but they refused to place me in the 5th or 6th grade because I was young and new to the country so I had to sit there and learn thing I'd already knew. My first test in the US was to fill out the map of the US and list the capitals...it was so damn easy...and I was only 8 years old. So, I ended up disliking the school system here. Worse of all my brother and I had to take ESOL! -- we had a heavy british/jamaican accent and the teachers claimed they couldn't understand us...

Well that was unfair to place you in ESOL

Hey everybody..

just wan fi chime in on the school.. i agree w/ the post that it is the parents responsibility..

both Rogers's sons are A students..shoot, his 6 yr old knows how to spell competent.. LOL but i believe no matter where they went to school this would be the case..for some kids (like me lol) learning does come easier and they have natural desire to do well in school and do their h/w (THANK GOD, cuz i am not used to having to stay on kids about doing their work  )

BUT

my nephews right here in USA, who are smart kids, are having a TIME.. their mom NEVER helped them or even made sure they did their h/w cuz she didnt' really have to, now that they are getting older 2nd and 3rd grade, they like to play instead of do h/w and they are not FULLY understanding the more advanced concepts (multiplication w/ 2 digits, synonyms and homonyms) and they are FAILING some classes, so now they are w/ my mother to try and get them in gear, but she's not much better  .. hollers and screams at them bout their h/w BUT never SITS down w/ them to help.. after work she is too tired and frustrated to go over this stuff, half of which she don't half know anyway

i have been trying to go over and help out..

so i think you can have a "good school" in that they teach on advanced level, have small class size, low teacher-student ratio, high overal test scores etc, BUT if that 1 or 20 children out of the bunch is having a hard time grasping and is not practicing those concepts at home and NOBODY taking on the hardship and responsibility to ENSURE they get it, then what???

dills, hugs to likkle man and i hope his health and education gets better..

Wow Dillon, that is alot to deal with but gratefully they were able to detect in time for your to now act on it. He is lucky to have you as a Stepmom :star: Maybe its a good time to get his sight tested as well, my son was complaining of headaches in class and I thought it was more of his BS to get to the nurse's office for the afternoon but it wasn't. He actually was sitting too far away from the board and causing him strain and for the 1st time needed a prescription for glasses. The glasses made a huge difference and he needs to wear them in class, for reading and computer use. Glad to hear your stepson is motivated to learn that is awesome, that is half the battle conquered right there  !

Most do, but we had to learn to write in joinup so did my parents when they went to school from an early age.
