I know I haven't posted much lately so let me tell you what is going on in my world.

Things have been going pretty good at home with everyone getting along. Every now and then someones feelings get hurt because they aren't getting enough attention but it is a quick fix.

My step-son has been having problems adjusting to school and his school work. He is very far behind in his reading, writing and math skills which came to a shock to me. He is in 4th grade but reading at a 2nd grade level. The school he is in now tested his hearing and come to find out he has some hearing loss and is having problems hearing. He has said that it has been going on for at least a year and the loss is in both ears. His mother thought that there was nothing seriously wrong since he stopped complaining about it. So we have a long road ahead of us with getting him caught up. He is getting extra help in school and we work with him as much as we can at home and he has a great attitude towards learning.

I was just shocked that his school doesn't do hearing tests like they do here...maybe some of the hearing loss could have been prevented if they did.

Awwwww Dills Im sorry to hear this!!! Keep working with him though. They have excellent programs in the states to help with his problems and THANK GOD to hear he has a great attitude towards learning... That's every parents/teachers dream to have kids that are willing to learn....

This weekend my baby is turning 10 years old Halloween

We are having a sleep over for the 8th out of 10 times he has had a B-day. We had about 13 kids last year and who knows how many this year. Ima need some . Hubby is off work Thurs. - Sunday morning. So we will see.

Hi Heaven; CONGRATS I'll echo what Island said...make sure he gets all of his documents...they're things at POE and for AOS that he will need from the medical documents. I just pray that all the info is in the brown envelope since he can't be opened until he gets here. did they tell you when the medical will get sent to the embassy or does he have to go back and pick it up?

We just found out on Monday Finesse so I have made an appointment with an audiologist. His teacher is great and is really helping out any way he can as well. He told me that he got sick in Jamaica with the flu or some type of sickness and his ears plugged up and never unplugged. So maybe if he gets tubes or something some of the hearing can come back. We will have to see what the doctor says.

Please keep us posted...imagine how he feels?

Dillon I found the same problem with my step-son. When I was in JA in June we had him for a week. One day we were in the car going to Negril and he was singing Vybz Kartel all day. He already has a problem with his speech so you know singing was wrecking my nerve. My daughters and his dad thought it was funny but I did not. I told him I hope he knows his school work like he knows that song. So I said spelling time. I gave him some spelling words a and was Shock that he could not spell Cat, Mat, Bat, Rat, Sat etc. I ask his dad why he do not know to spell these words and he said his mother sends him to school. Well I said sending him to school is not the problem when he gets home someone needs to check his H/W and give him some spelling test. I am a real stickler for school work. Now I have his dad calling him everyday and giving him spelling test over the phone. I told him when he gets here its going to really different he will have bed time, reading hour and less TV during the week.

Isn't it funny how quickly kids learn songs but can't spell read or write?

OMG....honestly I just logged in to ask if he's ever been sick and his ears glogged up. I have a few family members that went through the same thing...sometimes the loss is temporary and as far as testing in the school all I can do is (SHAKE) my head. Some schools do it...but my aunts had to petition to have it done in our area. Not only hearing, but vision as well.

I have been shaking my head all week. I thought he was at a great school but I guess not...I told hubby he needs to call them and ask for his money back.

Im not sure what primary school my brother -in-law, who is 7 years old by the way ,goes to, but he gets all A's he is the highest in his class...All I know is he gets up early as all heck to go to school, catches a cab to the bus and takes the bus by himself to school. My MIL was just saying yesterday how she doesn't see how my fiance has so much patience with helping him do homework. Ive seen him make him study even when he didn't have a test for school.

finesse I went to a VERY good school in Jamaica, but that was in the 70s and my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles my family made sure my brother and I did our school work, they didn't play...I enjoyed my childhood, but I also knew that school was very important and not play time.

When I came to the US I was 2 grades ahead of children in my age group, but they refused to place me in the 5th or 6th grade because I was young and new to the country so I had to sit there and learn thing I'd already knew. My first test in the US was to fill out the map of the US and list the capitals...it was so damn easy...and I was only 8 years old. So, I ended up disliking the school system here. Worse of all my brother and I had to take ESOL! -- we had a heavy british/jamaican accent and the teachers claimed they couldn't understand us...

Sometimes its not the school. Its the parents and the rules they set. Evrybody thinks its cute when the child knows all the dutty songs dem.

exactly why i ask...i know i have heard people say this same thing before (how advanced the school in Ja is/was)...and i don't want to assume anything....but the trend (on this board anyway) seems to be the opposite..

Wow good catch. So where do you go from here. Will he have to wear hearing aids, surgery what? Once his hearing situation is fixed he might catch up to where he belongs.

I think a big part of it is definitely the at home influence - When DJ's son was living with DJ's mom / sister, he knew all his multiplication tables at age 5 - He went to the other grandmother, and forgot them all - there was no reinforcement of what he learned in school.
