The only form of socialized medicine at all in the US is administered through the VA.

Impossible. Ask Joe. Socialized medicine will never pass.

Well - it won't - because that's not what is being proposed.

That doesn't change the fact though that Joe doesn't understand what socialized medicine is.

I know, I know. My point was that socialized medicine actually has passed long ago and exists in the US today. Same goes for public health insurance schemes. So, to make a claim that either will never pass is simply ignoring the very reality we live in.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm hoping will have a final bill on the President's desk to sign before the New Year.

I'm optimistic too - and realistic. Socialist medicine will never pass. You're delusional by thinking that getting it out of committee is "momentum" but then again, its libs we're talking about.

What do you call Medicare?

A failure? Bankrupt? Hmm?

Its not socialist medicine to cover our veterans who fought for us.

Medicare is a bankrupt failure and does not pay for itself. So if you want to use it as a prime example, go right on ahead.

that's an earned benefit, not socialism at all.

All I'm saying is that it is the closest practical model of socialized medicine we have in the US.

And the closest practical model to a horse's behind (sorry, donkey) is Nancy Pelosi, so what's your point..?

And a failure if you base it on sustainability. The answer is not raised taxes.

The answer is Super Joe! He flies in, once again, to save the day. Cut doctors fees, kick malpractice lawyers in the balls and steal drugs from Canada for needy Floridians. Super Joe!

I don't need to propose an alternative. The whole premise of it is a scare tactic.

Take a deep breath, Chuck. Socialized Medicine (term used to describe systems where health care is administered and delivered by the government) is not the same as Socialism. No need to break out the red flag just yet just because you are a beneficiary of a socialized medicine scheme. Nobody is disputing that this is an earned benefit.

What I, and many others, are suggesting is this: that the right to health care should be an earned benefit - earned by virtue of American citizenship (or permanent resident alien blah blah blah) :)

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

I am aware of the difference. In the VA system, however, we have a model where the government administers and delivers health care - i.e. the docs and nurses actually work for the government. That's what one might refer to as a "socialized medicine" scheme somewhat similar to the UK's NHS.

If Medicare is a failure based on sustainability, then the fractured, private insurance model we currently have is the mother of all failures. After all, Medicare rates haven't gone up since 1986 - that's almost a quarter century - while benefits are provided to an ever growing number of recipients. The private insurance inductry has jacked rates well over 100% in the last decade alone and has just come out to tell us that they will rise well over 100% again in the coming decade. Sustainable? In your bubble, perhaps. In the real world, not so much.
