I graduated this summer and i have been looking for jobs, 2 months now and i still haven't got any offer. Even though i don't have the money, I decided to use my credit card to attend the women engineer career fair in long beach ca...total cost $450 [transport, food, accommodation etc]. I am leaving in 2 days and i can only pray that i get something out there. I am stuck at this dead end job on my campus...it pays my rent but i know i don't belong here. I have heard 2 phone interviews but that's it. I usually go out jogging to lift my spirits but its too cold and its been raining like crazy. I feel so down.

Somewhow i just feel i should say something, i know its easy to say dont worry, with time things would get better. Hang in there, all it takes is just one chance, one phone call, one chance meeting. Its gonna be ok.

I don't think most college have said this, "Apply for jobs starting the senior year."

Hmm...I'm sorry to hear. What I'd suggest for you is to find an entry job wherever. One thing which I hate about jobs is that most of them requires experience engineers. Apply nationwide if you have to. Look every place in the US. Get that job experience levels. It's very important. Be willing to commit time in that company for 2-3 years. It requires lots of priorities when this happen. You need to figure out a place to live, car, etc...However, when you're making 55k+/year - that is the last of your worries. Once you have the experience, you may look for jobs nearby your previous residence and you'll more than likely hit the job you want.

Millionaires don't live in one spot. Heck, to be successfull you need to be willing to move to where the job is. Talk to your spouse that you'll only need 2-3 years of working in that town or whatever

That is the advantage in the medical profession. You must fullfill a residence requirements before you can work anywhere.

You're better off than most recent grads with an engineering degree. Getting an entry level job out of college is sometimes the toughest one to get.

"The unemployment rate for engineers jumped from 2.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008 to 3.9 percent in the first quarter of 2009. For those working in computer occupations, the rate went from 3.3 percent to 5.4 percent. By comparison, the first-quarter rate for all professional workers increased from 3 percent to 3.7 percent."

Now, I know many discipline of Engineering has a dedicated professional organization for that type of work.

For example, with Electrical and Computer Engineers, they have the IEEE organization. I don't know what it is for Civil or Mechanical. Nonetheless, check those sites out. Join those organization. They have sites relating to job search for the particular discipline.

The DoD is looking for Engineers, and the NSA. At the IEEE Career Site, there's a listing for over 1000s of jobs for government workers.

I'm surprised, every year they say they need more engineers and the employers aren't getting enough graduates. Yet, it's difficult for one to find a job in Engineering. Catch 22.

This is good advice. If it is possible, be willing to relocate...open all doors to opportunity and get the experience you need to get your career rolling. I've relocated 4 times...but now (cuz I'm a bit older) I was easily able to choose the final place where I 'wanted' to live, simply based on resume strength. But, you gotta take some time to build that up...

However, blessings to you in your job search whether or not you're able to relocate (F)

These services are good starts...but networking with other professionals is how I've landed my best jobs. I know that just out of the university it might be tough...but start to reach out to individuals that you knew in college, or through your internship...this is how most people find jobs...

Give it a shot and God Bless! Its tough right now, but with a degree in Engineering, you'll do fine. Also, it might not be your interest, but consider going into a management or business job...lots of engineers can take these positions simply because of the strength of their degree. Once you find a job back in engineering you can make a change back to that discipline...

Engineering has been hard hit by outsourcing to off shore for most jobs that don't require a citizenship. Think small, the big companies send things out of the country little ones can't afford to. I don't remember if you stated a specialty but small cable companies, more mom and pop type will be interested in you. Big places will either require a citizenship or not have work.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Like i said in my earlier post, relocation is not a problem for me and i have been putting it on all my applications.

I joined most of the organizations for engineers and the one that im so into is the SWE [society of women engineers] and that's the career fair im going for this week.

I have interned with a small Utilities company but the economy hit them hard and they are just not hiring right now.

I also interned with a big Oil & Gas company and i have been in contact with the HR but she claims its the corporate offices that are in charge of hiring full time recent college engineers.

I graduated in May '09 in engineering, and it took me about 3 months after graduation to land a job... That was almost a year of job hunting because I too started looking in my senior year. The students in our previous graduating class already had jobs lined up before they graduated, but this year only a handful of us have landed a job so far. Career Builder & Monster did not help me any because most engineering companies hire internally, and they just advertise the job because it is required by the law.

If you have experience in O&G, check out these website:

RigZone

Oil Grads

Hope this helps!
