Hi guys,

When I pass the POE with the CR1 visa I will get a passport stamp...what is like the Greencard, which I receive a couple weeks after arrival, right?

Does this stamp already allows me to work or do I need to wait for my SSN an SSC?

Do I have to wait to get this card before applying for a job as well?

Thanks in Advance

Isabel

If you have the MRIV with I-551 langauge you have authorization to work. Technically you can start work if you have applied for an SSN (I assume you checked off on the DS-230 that you wanted an SSN?), but finding an employer that is aware of this might be hard to find.

http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/intern...=129227,00.html

Delays in Issuing SSNs to Aliens by the Social Security Administration

https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203410

RM 00203.410 Evidence of Alien Status for an SSN Card for an Alien Lawfully Admitted for Permanent Residence

2. Machine Readable Immigrant Visa with Temporary I-551 Language

The MRIV shows the alien's identification number ("A" number) as the "Registration Number" in the upper right-hand corner of the MRIV.

Example:

If the admission stamp shows a date of entry into the U.S. as January 4, 2004, the expiration of the temporary I-551 status will be January 3, 2005. DO NOT use the expiration date on the MRIV itself to determine when the temporary I-551 status expires. The expiration date on the MRIV only shows how long the MRIV is valid not how long the alien's temporary I-551 status is valid.

RM 00202.315 Enumeration At Entry

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202315

Answer "Yes" to Questions 33a. and 33b.on Form DS-230

You will then need to allow at least 3 weeks to see if the Enumeration

At Entry process works. If you don't receive your SSN card within 3

weeks it's time to head on down to your friendly neighborhood

SSA office.

Find office:

http://www.ssa.gov/locator

If you have been assigned an SSN the office can provide you with the

number. However, it is has been over 14 days from the day the SSN was

assigned and you haven't received the card you will probably need to

apply for a replacement card.

Take proof of age, identity and work authorized alien status. Proof of

age is not needed for a replacement card.

Birth certificate, passport and I-551 card or MRIV with temporary I-551

language should be enough to take into the SSA office.
