Congrats to everyone on their approvals/interviews. Nelson had his interview today and was approved pending further documentation due to the I134. I need a sponsor. This is proving to be more difficult than I thought...but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the guidelines for that are? they said I need a cosponsor based on the fact that I haven't been employed for a year straight (I was in chile for part of last year). I guess I am short 4,000 dollars or something like that. If I were to ask someone to sponsor him what is the timeline? isn't it, if it is not an annual income, the amount available has to be 5 times that of what is missing of the annual income? so I would need either someone that made that difference of 4,000 a year or someone with 20,000 in savings or assets? so it's 5 years? I am going to keep searching on the forums but if anyone knows off hand that would be fantastic. I need to send him this information asap. he might need to forfeit his ticket if I can't get this paperwork to him soon.

Thanks so much and congrats to everyone that is done!! so close!

To be honest with you, I've heard it's very difficult to make up income with assets. I doubt any of us could give you a solid answer on this, either, but so you might try posting your questions as a new topic in the general K-1 forum, if you haven't yet.

Congrats on your approvals, Liberty & Krilli! Congrats on the wedding, Macaroni!!

Liberty - I asked my parents as a backup plan. (I make more than enough to be his sponsor, but I have a regular irregular kind of employment - I work full time only 3 months a year, and work part time the other 9.) If they had said no, I don't know what I would have done. Anyway, if the sponsor is an immediate relative, they need to have 3x the value in assets (so, $12,000) and I believe they knock off any debt on the assets before considering them (so, if you have a $100k house that's got a $90k mortgage left, you've only got a $10k asset), which is why some people have problem w/ the assets. If it's NOT an immediate relative, it's 5x the difference ($20,000). I don't know if your immediate relatives count as immediate relatives for the purpoes of sponsorship. If they told you 5x, then probably not.

Krilli - keep your cosponsor in mind when filing for AOS. You might not need it, you might. Some consulates only require 100%, not 125%, for the K1, but the AOS does require the 125%.

BTW, everyone: if you have target dates for POE/wedding in mind (even if you haven't been approved yet!), add them to your signature or otherwise let me know & I'll add you to the lists :)

We received word from the embassy that we are now "documentary qualified and is waiting in line for an immigrant visa interview appointment." Although they cannot inform us on the approximate time of when an appointment will be set...things are moving...slowly, but at least its a step closer!

Thanks for your help. I found a cosponsor! one other question. if the person is married and she is sending in her tax information with her husbands name on it as well , is that a problem? do they joint file or is that not allowed for the affidavit? I remembe rreading here somewhere that it can only be one person. This person wouldn't have to make the over 18,000 poverty line for 2 would they? they would only have to supplement my income correct?

would she need a bankstatement as well or would they just accept tax info only? I know they ask for both but the embassy had mentioned just sending her tax info...I may sound naive but I want to make sure to not cause her grief if it's not worth it.

any thing else anyone else had trouble with with co-sponsoring?

thanks for your help...

congrats on the approval!

I have questions about all this financial stuff too. My parents are going to co sponsor, so that's not problem. Nowhere on the I-134 does it say what documentation I'm supposed to have like bank statements and that sort of thing. So why do I have to send them? Do I have to get noterized copies of my tax information AND my parents'? It's all very confusing...do I have to do all of that stuff for both copies of the I-134 that I send in?

Thanks guys,

Sorry I'm so whiny, but I'm just so confused and overwhelmed by all of this.

Oh, and Does he have to take the copy of the 1-129F with him to the interview??

And what is a "Police Certificate" and does he need one if he has no criminal record? If he does, how does he go about getting one???

1) You'll want tax transcripts (Google or check the IRS website for what these are) for both you and your co-sponsors.

2) You'll fill out two copies of the I-134, spend time to make sure you fill them in correctly and that the information is the same on both (minus the financial differences)

3) If you're "paranoid" you can also print out a few pay stubs for both you and co-sponsor.

4) I-129F is not needed

5) Police Certificate/NBI Clearance I am pretty sure that's if your fiancee has lived out of her respected country (ie; lived in France) for a specific amount of time. Check out the embassy's website for more information.

Best of luck!

congrats on the approval!

So happy you found a cosponsor! So your cosponsor is married and she filed her taxes jointly with her husband? I don't think that is a problem, or else lots of people who had their parents cosponsor would be in big trouble!

Anyone else can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think for joint filers, only one of the people actually needs to fill out the I-134. However, they have to make over the poverty line with all their dependents taken into consideration.

As for the bank statements, in our case, we didn't send any. Some embassies/consulates want to see more than others, though. This is a good question to pose to your country-specific forum, or just search around there - your question has probably been answered!

I have gone to that link numerous times. Obviously I'm still confused. Thank you for making me feel like a complete idiot. Thank you Jared and May for answering my questions. We're really just trying to get all this squared away and finally be almost done with all this paperwork and I don't want it to be incorrect or leave something out so that we have more delays in our process, you know?

I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention. But you're not being fair to yourself unless you do a bit of your own digging and research. The same questions came up for me in my mind, and I found all my answers by doing a bit of digging in the UK forum.
