I am applying my citizenship based on 5 year residency.

I traveled twice outside the US that lasted 4 months (first trip) and 5 months and 26 days (2nd trip)

Should I need to submit my tax transcript for 2005-2008?

You will find this document very useful as it answers all of your questions. At the end there is a list of all of the documents you need to provide and under what circumstances they are required: http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf (A Guide to Naturalization).

Since you did not travel for more than 6 months - although you were close with the 2nd trip, you did not break the continuous residency requirement (more than 6 months) so do not need to prove you maintained ties to the US by submitting income tax transcripts. If you had been out of the US for 6 months or more then yes, you would need to provide the tax transcripts.

You will find all of the information you need in the booklet at the above link - it is the one referred to in the N-400 instructions. Good luck.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

If your trips are close together, the IO may question your residency, (despite each trip being under 6 months) in which case tax transcripts would be good to have, along with other documents to show you maintained residency during the period.

If these two trips are a minimum of a few months apart, tax transcripts should not be needed.

I had two lengthy trips on my application, 176 days and 137 days, and about 6 shortish trips. this did not cause me any problems.
