I agree that what I did is not the best course, but what I don't understand is the hostility. I'm not sure what you're mad about. That I lived for 2 years under the poverty limit? That I couldn't file for any government program? That, as a person who love school, couldn't enroll in the local university? It's not even a question of "using tax dollars" since USCIS gets their money from the fees they charge. So yes, I can see why people would be mad/jealous that I am here (if THEY had to wait away from their fiance), or have been here for so long, but I would never wish ill (as in hoping people get deported) on them.

There is a process to follow, and delineated consequences for not following them. You chose to side step them. I'm sorry that your situation was not great, but that is beside the point. This is a board for legal immigration and what you did was circumvent it regardless of your intent.

People become VERY bitter during this process and because we have all gone through hell to get where we are everyone feels resentment for others who don't go through the same things and processes the legal way (while I overstayed I was still completely within USCIS limits so technically I am not in the black, more of a grey zone)

I don't blame either group.

Though I do laugh when people (especially Christians (seems normal in the US)) say "Peace to all creatures" but then spew hate. haha.

So, because I did not follow a process I wasn't aware existed, I am... what? Not welcome? I understand (now) that there are processes and which one would have been the one to follow, but I don't think I should be chastised to this intent because I didn't follow it. It's not like I crossed the border with an evil plan to live here out of status. Our situation changed, and we were not able to file in time. If someone lives such a life where money and time is always available to them, then by all mean, trow the first stone, but you know what they say about that.

100% agree with you, and that is my only concern. I understand why people would feel jealous or mad about my situation, but, like you said, the hate speech is never helpful to anyone.

I think the anger stems from you living there illegally, regardless of the situation. The reasons you couldn't go to school, or use any government programs is because you were there illegally. No one's going to feel sorry for you for that. It could also be that people who go through the system improperly make it that much harder for those of us who try to do it the right way... Wishing you get deported is one thing (I don't wish that), but yeah... you have to remember that you shouldn't have stayed there for that long, as you know... and regardless of your original intentions you DID cheat the system basically. I love school too, and can't afford to go back, and I really hate my f'ing job! But I'm stuck here.. I'm not asking for pity and understanding about it. That's just how things are. If I thought I could get away with it, I'd love to be able to just pick up and move to the US now and ride it out until I come back for the interview. But I can't, because we can't afford for me to be out of work that long (because I'm not going to work there illegally, as that would really jeopardize everything). So because of MY financial situation, I'm basically forced to do this the RIGHT way. AWAY from my fiance.

I was hoping to stay silent on this topic, but your last comment there really hit a nerve. Sorry. I do honestly wish you all the best, but remember that you DID break the law, and you DID avoid all this hardship that the rest of us all had to go through in order to do this the proper way. Maybe whatever you're going through now is payment for what you missed before. lol Consider it as leveling the playing field.

Ignorance to the law is no defense. You should have been aware of what you were getting yourself into. As to whether your welcome or not, that is not for me to decide. Your intent when you came here has no bearing on your current situation. You obviously knew 2 years ago that you had to file to adjust your status and were not able to.

Seriously? Filing for a government program?

Oh no you didn't.

You are not going to get much sympathy for your situation here. If you came to this country and had financial problems then perhaps you should have gone back to Canada to save up some funds and help your husband out.

No one is jealous of you believe me... in fact I feel bad that you didn't do it properly. Unlike you, I have NOTHING to worry about with my process because I did it legally. :)

Well, I understand what you're all saying and I have a couple things to reply, but, I still hear the bitterness in your words. So, I'm just going to take a break right here.

Thank you all for your input and I hope your situation all work out.

**edit

As far as the government program, my point was not to illicit sympathy, but when people say "you've been here illegally!" to me, it always sounds like they think I've been here living on thousands of dollars in a mansion. I have not. You want to make yourself feel better at my expanse, you go right ahead. I was raised in the real world, where No One, and I do mean No One does the legal right thing all the time. So to me it's just hypocrisy, like the person who wished so much bad things upon me, but that seems to identify as some kind of religious person.

I don't think you live in the real world either, if you did you wouldn't stay here living under the poverty level... that isn't the real world imo. The real world is taking responsibility for your actions. I would never stay here and live under the poverty level, illegally, unable to work and pull my own weight while my husband works to try to keep us afloat. I understand you don't want to spend time apart, well sometimes you need to make big sacrifices to get what you want.

I have the OP on ignore for obvious reasons , and I was seriously trying to stay out of this... but wth: when you are in any country illegally you are not allowed to complain about not being able to work, go to school, apply for government programs, etc. Let me rephrase: you can complain; no one will really feel for you.

I don't wish bad things upon the OP; I just don't give a ####### or care much for people that claim ignorance of the law as a way of excusing themselves -- puhleaze. It's like "the dog ate my homework" level of discourse. The OP now knows she did not do the right thing -unwillingly- and still defends it. Sorry, no tears here.
