Original birth certificate of petitioner (Vietnam)

Does the consulate also need the original birth certificate. List of required documents on the consulate website include original birth certificate of petitioner. That means everyone who petitions has to send original birth certificate to HCMC? Also, if I am not born in the USA, does that mean I have to send also my original citizenship certificate? Just don't like idea of having my original birth certificate and/or citizenship floating outside of the USA.

Best to have a certified copy of your BC and Divorce decree [if applicable] at the embassy interview.

No one knows what COs will ask for. Better to have in hand in case it's asked for than have to send later when in AP.

Who told you that your original birth certificate was needed?

Our cases might be a little different but just keep it in mind...

My husband was VERY insistent with submitting a copy of my birth certificate until I told him that it wasn't needed and that I didn't have a copy of my original birth certificate - that and because the name on my birth certificate and what I go by are different - My birth cert has 4 names whereas I "unofficially" dropped one from the rest of my documents...

The packet 3 or 4 letter I received also stated that it WAS NOT needed since I filed using my passport as my method of ID...

We got the pink, and our approval slip also says NA next to petitioner birth certificate--check it out in my photos if you'd like...the pink slip that is...

The consulate in HCM does ask for an original and copy of both the petitioner's and beneficiary's birth certificates with the packet 4 instructions. Proof of petitioner's citizenship is NOT required. It's presumed that was provided with the petition to USCIS.

vietazn, they will usually return all original documents (except for forms) that are submitted. They just keep the copies.

That is interesting. For the birth certificate, do you have to submit the original or a copy? I was born outside the US but after moving to Florida I was Naturalized. In this case, would I submit the birth certificate as well as a certified english translation?

Yes Carrick along with copies of both... they dont really need the naturalization paper but it wont hurt to have it with her.

At the interview for K visa you need a certified copy or original along with a standard copy (for them to keep) for both the petitioner and beneficiary. If the beneficiary was born during the conflict when births were not recorded... a document can be obtained from the local government office where the birth took place.

Just be sure to have copies available or the original will go into the file.
