To sign or not to sign DS-156

The VJ directions for Packet 3 state not to sign the DS-156 of Packet 3. However, no where in the actual directions for this form does it say not to sign it. Am I missing something?

Are you sure you're not confusing the DS-230 with the DS-156?

I don't think so. I am looking at the DS-156 the one that makes the barcode and then when you print everything out there is a place for the signature, and it says "41. I certify that I have read and understood all the questions set forth in this application and the answers I have furnished on this form are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. I understand that any false or misleading statement may result in the permanent refusal of a visa or denial of entry into the United States. I understand that possession of a visa does not automatically entitle the bearer to enter the United States of America upon arrival at a port of entry if he or she is found inadmissible."but I can't find where it says not to sign.

Is this the one that you sign the top half but have to sign bottom in front of the interviewer?

I think that is the other one you aren't supposed to sign. There are 2.

For the K1 visa the DS-156K is the only form that I didn't sign (as per the instructions on the form), I was given it by the consular official at interview and asked to write Jen's full name on it and sign it there.

You're correct in that the DS-156's instructions do not indicate (one way or the other) that the form is to be signed in front of an IO (while the DS-156K and DS-230 do) but the FAQ's here on VJ don't seem to differentiate between the two (DS-156/DS-156K) - that may be an oversight because I'm pretty sure Karin signed the DS-156 prior to the interview (and presumably many others as well).
