I am with the notion that if you work, regardless of what you earn, you are working class. Middle class a much more widely used term in the US than anywhere else I have been. Most of the people I know who earn a decent living, own a house, drive a nice car etc would classify themselves as middle class here.

I guess this is what I find interesting.

I was "raised" middle-class but my dad made around $400,000 a year.

My husband makes around $40,000 before taxes and I do think that we are middle class.

That is: enough to struggle (no debt but no savings) but not enough to qualify for government assistance.

you're not middle class.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,669, and the median income for a family was $51,545.

So...what am I? I think that after taxes, we make around the median income. Of course we're in Merriam now, not Lawrence.

even worse if in merriam

The median income for a household in the city was $48,455, and the median income for a family was $54,639.

400,000/year....Last time I saw that number was from a professor.

At what University? They must be doing a great deal of research and publishing to make that $

selling grades?

University of Massachusetts Medical School, Boston University Medical, Tufts Medical....Chancellor Professors make well above 400k.

Boston Herald state worker salary database will give you the state workers (State schools are considered a part of the state). Find a Chancellor Professor at any MA state school, or look for a Professor in the UMASS Medical

BU, Tufts, and Havard makes more than 600k....My sister prof who isn't chancellor level or equivalent makes 200k at Harvard

My father is a boarded ER phys at a teaching hospital -- he's been a doc there for 15+ years. The hospital happens to be connected to the medical school, so he is a member of the teaching staff because he is an ER attending.

Fl Universities dont pay that well.... But then again the cost of living is lower here... And it really depends on How much the Prof is bringing to the table along with the demand for the program.. I am by no means a cash cow for them, but they are making good money off of me... And I am there with your sis $... I have some friends that are Provost, Deans etc in the NE and they are above 400.... but at what price.. they really have to del with more politics and ####### than I would want to tolerate.

I think I am upper middle class, or at least I live that way.... But if I lived in another city that could be a different story... NY for example

Who sells grades anymore.. cash transactions are too risky... its all about trading grades for sexual favors...

i don't know what middle class is now.

my thoughts - base it on the median wage for your city.
