I am anticipating our interview for this December 2009. If all goes well (hoping), my wife maybe able to return with me in December or by early next year. If she arrives in the US in January, how long does it take to get a green card?

I have an assignment on Crete (Greece) in Feb/March time frame and would LOVE to be able to take her to Greece and stop over in Paris :innocent: . So my questions:

1. How long to get the conditional green card once spouse is here?

2. Do you keep the vietnamese passport until you become a U.S. citizen?

Thanks!

She will keep her Vietnamese passport until she becomes a U.S. citizen. She will not get a U.S. passport until she becomes a USC. If Vietnamese citizens need a visa for Greece, she will still need to acquire that as well.

I hope ya'll enjoy your trip. :star:

Took me 3 months to get the physical plastic green card, but when your wife enters, they'll stamp her passport 's visa page, and that stamp will serve as a temporary green card for a year, so you are good to travel whenever!

Yep, she keeps the Vietnamese passport (and thus needs visas for most European countries) until she is a USC.

Don't forget to apply for the needed visas. Should be easier to get as she would be a US LPR.

Worth looking into, since there are some exceptions. For instance, LPRs do not need visas to enter Mexico; even if their nationality is usually required to have one.

As a GC holder, I don't think she'll need a visa as Greece is in EU... My husband didn't need a visa for all European countries we visited, including Greece...

She will need a visa; your husband's case is different, as he is from Bulgaria, which is an EU country.

Thank you all! This is consistent with what I have read. I'll stop by the Greek Embassy when I go to pick up my VN visa next week! Its less than a mile from each other.

If you are travelling to Europe after receiving her Green Card, I think she is considered as LPR already, so she doesn't need a visa.

Lancelot: an LPR is not a citizen. Visa requirements are based on citizenship.

I think people are getting mixed on on whether the GC holder needs a visa upon return to the US - of course he/she doesn't, that is the whole point of a GC

BUT being a holder of a Vietnamese passport and traveling to a foreign country in most cases you DO need a visa for THAT country

i.e. Greece http://www.greekembassy.org/embassy/conten...p;article=20404
