I think public TV is far better...and the history channel. I see these blah blah blah dudes all day and change the channel. Just media giants with lobbyists furthering their own interests.

I think ummm the korean prez would make better ratings. i wanna hear what he has to say (and learn about what makes him tick)!

The segment was a good civil discussion. The kind of discussions that America needs again.

Not this childish I'm a lib or I am a conservative #######. Who gives a ####### what we are? what's more important is actually solving issues for a change.

what's been solved here? just talk and absolutely nothing in reality has changed. just a bunch of woman-gab, really.

*guilty as charged, as well

Constructive dialogue is the first part of solving problems.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Hence the point of dialogue. The lobbyist and private special interest groups cannot keep the public naive forever. No amount of money can silence the truth. Historically, not even the rule of Kings and Queens or genocide was able to do this.

But it's sooo deep and corrupt. Did you know the "war on drugs" is financed by private for profit prisons and they're just now uncovering judge, police and politician bribes? They get 50k a year per prisoner.

The proof is all there...it's so ugly and everyone elects a "tough on crime" #######. Despite Amsterdam has half the drug issues we have because of their "safe zone" and they have rehab.

Treatment and prevention for every dollar spent saves 5 to 7 dollars yet there's no free treatment for everyone...they put em all in jail.

Our system is sooo deeply corrupt I don't see anything changing, really! The income difference is vast now and the super rich are getting richer right now while the rest are losing out. It's an ugly non capitalist system

We're a corpocracy. The same own the media...we're fed this BS from the top and there's no way around it.

The US has the highest drug use amongst developed countries in the world. The question is why is it so cool and why is there such a need to use it. That's not corporate media but the first amendment and Hollywood to blame there, which glamorizes its use along with personal choice.

The issue with the system here is the system itself. I guarantee you that if the US migrated to a parliamentary style system, things would improve and trust would be restored to the government. However, that s not the issue alone. Not too many countries out there that are paranoid about their government being the 'evil guy', that is apparently out to get them; excluding 2nd and 3rd world countries of course. Government is what you make it. Clearly many here vote along party lines and prefer charismatic leaders. Never bothering to actually look at the candidates actual credentials. I am not taling about president either. The biggest problem is with Senators who don't know squat.

Another huge, and I mean huge, problem is the lack of understanding that the president is not a military General. Contrary to popular belief, he cannot do as he pleases. He is one of three; without the other two branches of government, he has no power. So when people say well he failed in 9 months, no he did not. Without congress and the house of reps, he is powerless period. Actually a prime minister technically has more power the a president. Americans clearly don't pay much attention to their local leaders who actually run the show, yet falsely put all of this pressure on the president. That is not how the system here works. Even I as a foreigner, as a resident, comprehend that. It's why Bush was blamed for the failure of Katrina. Not the mayor; not the state leaders; nope, Bush.

The president does have certain responsibilities but nowhere near all of them or what people make it out to be. People seem to forget that here.

more people drank during prohibition. The numbers are all there.

Why is it the two top killers are legal while less harmful drugs are not? Alcohol and Tobacco kill more and cause more damage than say...mushrooms or pot. I'm not an advocate but by the scheduled substances grades, alcohol and tobacco should be schedule 2 and 1.

We're the war on drugs country...that's why. It's not the media it's the sytem. Far less people smoked pot before it was illegal now everyones going to prison. Just a bad system...not to mention lots come in here and I'd hate to say the government doesn't mind some of it.

THere are powerful lobbysists...paying millions to trent lott's brother and a judge in pa to convict kids for profit prisons...it's all a sham and destroying our country.

we've got 25 percent of the worlds incarcerated population. We don't make up that pecentage on earth. For this reason the US is not a nice place to live...too many line pockets and the statistics speak clearly what works but the money talks here. that's what's all ###### up about the US

Prohibition, the founding fathers, the Constitution etc; we live in 2009. People need to stop looking at a totally different eras and using it to justify 2009. My favorite is determining whether something is the right thing to do, or not, based on something like Franklin's "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty or safety...". That attitude is what has kept this country back. That is, the total disregard for the context or era of a statement. Aus solution to what you mention: A pack of cigarettes cost $12 bucks. A six pack is a good $13 too. Spirits are through the roof.

They also have just as strict laws yet a much lower problem. Without getting into a detailed analysis,

1. The government prohibits the promotion of drug use period. For example, you cannot buy the unrated version on DVD. It does not work that way there.

2. The police have the power to do their job. The same reason drugs are a problem here is the same reason gangs and organized crime is so prevalent. The police have to waste time following outdated amendments and unreasonable rules; not to mention ACLUs etc. This can be applied to anything really. Like the war in Vietnam, where the US had to follow rules of engagement yet the enemy did whatever they wanted. Hence, the war failed. Any analyst can see the problem here.

Edit: Michael Moore said it best, federally mandate people are paid a decent living and the crime rate will respond accordingly.

Hollywood and free speech are responsible for drug use?

That's a stretch...

Not responsible but they do glamorize it and it does have an influence on kids. Hence, the restriction in numerous developed countries.

Holland ....we need to follow their example.

Look at the LEAP vidoes. I was saying it's all BS but that opened my eyes....and I specialize in drug treatment. It's insane they spend disgusting amounts of money on prisons and piss for treatment when treatment is the only thing that works...

look throudh the LEAP videos.

I agree with the poverty. Anyone will do what they gotta do to make money or escape a dismal existence.
