Why should Barry have gotten the award? Anyone? Anyone? Bueler?

So the Right Wing gripe isn't really over the fact that two Democrats in the last couple of years have been awarded the prize. Your gripe is with the winner selection process itself, which is obviously rigged by Lefties?

Again you didn't answer the question. This isn't "Whose Line Is It Anyway" where the game today is answering questions with questions.

Because Joseph, as popular as it is today for everyone to feel they are more than qualified to make such judgments, I like to leave it up to the real judges who decide on such matters. Although it is fun to root for a particular candidate, when the final decision is made, I don't go all Kanye West like the Right Wingers have over this.

Well if anything its worth it just because it pisses you off

Wow i didn't think you were that small minded (ok well... yeah i did..)

Friday is the day to descend to your level ;)

After all its much easier than answering a question I leveled to you at least twice (which you deflected each time).

Oh you mean you want a discussion now - instead of endless platitudes about liberals types?

Perhaps you missed the part where I said that I don't really follow the Nobel Awards.

Whether he deserves it or not - I really don't care

They did that just to pizz off the militant right wing nuts and they accomplished that. Awesome.

Personally I consider myself to be a militant left wing nut and I am REALLY pissed off. The Norwegian Peace Prize committee has made a joke out of the peace prize. AGAIN.

On the bright side, this means no one on the planet was more deserving for the Peace Prize than yet another miserable American.

BTW, Americans won the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Not bad for the worst healthcare system in the developing world. Perhaps Obama will win the prize for medicine next year after his healthcare plan passes.

I wonder if the busy President will be able to make a sacrifice and take more than 5 hours out of his extremely hectic schedule to go to Scandinavia this time....

Listening to his speech I am happy to hear not even he thinks he deserves it. I can't but agree with him.

Personally I consider myself to be a militant left wing nut and I am REALLY pissed off. The Norwegian Peace Prize committee has made a joke out of the peace prize. AGAIN.

I think this sums it up nicely...

It's not the accustomed stance of a writer or blogger. But this one does have me at something of a loss for words. I notice the condemnation of the Taliban, the edged snark of the superciliati. But I also see Ana Marie Cox's first-off Twitter: "Apparently Nobel prizes now being awarded to anyone who is not George Bush." And while less than generous, I think she's on to the root of the matter. But perhaps not precisely in the way she thinks.

This is an odd award. You'd expect it to come later in Obama's presidency and tied to some particular event or accomplishment. But the unmistakable message of the award is one of the consequences of a period in which the most powerful country in the world, the 'hyper-power' as the French have it, became the focus of destabilization and in real if limited ways lawlessness. A harsh judgment, yes. But a dark period. And Obama has begun, if fitfully and very imperfectly to many of his supporters, to steer the ship of state in a different direction. If that seems like a meager accomplishment to many of the usual Washington types it's a profound reflection of their own enablement of the Bush era and how compromised they are by it, how much they perpetuated the belief that it was 'normal history' rather than dark aberration.

I guess

YOu guys should nominate, George Bush, ####### Cheney, Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh and the Extreme right wing conservative for the Nobel peace prize.

To you guys,

What have they done to promote peace here in the US or around the world?

We do not live in a Bubble, there are more to see beside the 4hall we live in, there are other nations beside the United States, We all have to live together and RESPECT each other, NOT one nation should feel they are all ALMIGHTY and should dominate the rest of the world, all you do is create animosity and more enemy.

I had a swedish friend who never came down to the states for a visit for the past 8 years because she just distaste the way our past govt do things, We somehow manage after 911 to KILL ALL THE SYMPATHY we had from around the world into A DISDAIN, nobody knows what's going to happen, but our founding fathers beleive in the resilience of the american people, when it comes to shove they will rise to the occasion, and LAST YEAR it shows Our fathers fathers beleif is still going strong.

It may be too early to give the award to OBAMA, We should all the proud and excited that AN AMERICAN WON< HE"S AMERICAN< DID I JUST SAY THAT< AN AMERICAN< AN AMERICAN WON< AN AMERICAN, AND HE HAPPENS TO BE OUR PRESIDENT (including you right wingers) what OUR PRESIDENT Needs is Our PRAYER, for all the tremendous task that lay ahead, GIVE HIM A CHANCE< GIVE AMERICA A CHANCE< CHEERS FOR AMERICA, America needs an end to that Division Politics, an end to that brainwashing, WE NEED TO START USING OUR OWN MIN RATHER THAN NEWS TITBITS.

AREN'T YOU PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN?

Past winners have been brilliant (minus Gore and the like).

Joseph, are you suffering from BDS this morning?

I guess it would help if you made sense?

How to Win the Nobel Peace Prize In 12 Days

Let’s take a look at the president’s first 12 days in the White House according to his public schedule to see what he did to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize.

print Email share recommend (15)

Editor's Note: Although President Obama had only been in office for 12 days before the nominations for this year's Nobel Peace prize closed the entire process actually takes a full year. According to the official Nobel Prize Web site invitation letters are sent out in September. Every year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee sends out thousands of letters inviting a qualified and select number of people to submit their nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The deadline to submit nominations is February 1. -- Two hundred five names were submitted for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, 33 of which are organizations. A short list of nominees is prepared in February and March. The short list is subject to adviser review from March until August. At the beginning of October, the Nobel Committee chooses the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates through a majority vote. The decision is final and without appeal. The names of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates are then announced."

Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize this morning. Over the last decade the only requirement to win the prize was that the nominee had to be critical of George W. Bush (see Al Gore, Mohamed El Baradei and Jimmy Carter).

President Obama has broken new ground here. Nominations for potential winners of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ended on February 1. The president took office only 12 days earlier on January 20.

Let’s take a look at the president’s first 12 days in the White House according to his public schedule to see what he did to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize:

January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.

January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information requests. Held an “open house” party at the White House.

January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manual techniques for interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (how’s that working out?)

January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with Tim Geithner.

January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.

January 25: Skipped church.

January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary Clinton. Attended Geithner's swearing in ceremony.

January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.

January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense secretary in the afternoon.

January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning Supreme Court decision on lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.

January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.

January 31: Took the day off.

February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.

So there you have it. The short path to the Nobel Peace Prize: Party, go to meetings, skip church, release federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries, party some more.

Good grief.

I seee we've found the righteous indignation / outrage story of the day.

How about every other day when the outrage story is about a Republican against health care reform? Or a right wing nut saying something nutty!

I obviously don't know a whole lot about the Nobel Peace Prize because I thought someone had to do a lot more to get it. I don't hate Obama or wish him ill, but the thought of him already getting the peace prize - well, ok then...seems silly to me.

To be honest some people are so biased that they won't criticize Obama when he needs to be criticized and they won't praise him(on the other side) when he needs to be praised either.

You see, that's just what pisses me off - why is it everything that comes up must be evaluated in light of something entirely hypothetical - for the sake of conversational relativism?

Lets at least be honest here.

I don't know why Obama got the peace prize, and I can't say I much care. Perhaps he doesn't deserve it in the sense of accomplishment - but the fact remains surely - that this is something that was awarded to him by an international panel outside of his control. You can criticise the guy all you like - but its not like he gave himself the award.

If we are talking VJ, then it's a fact that almost every political thread posted is some outrage about something. Every day! lol

In real life, I wouldn't really compare much because most people I see don't talk about politics much. But on VJ, it's noticeable to me how the double standards are a lot of the time about which outrage is acceptable. But I don't condone the angry behavior of people who can't seem to say anything good ever about Obama. But still I see double standards.
