I seee we've found the righteous indignation / outrage story of the day.

Finally. Leave it to 6 to find an accomplishment of sorts for Obama.

Oh my! The jealousy have brought together all the right wing nuts out. Stinking the whole room. Geezes. Their sweat of trying to say Obama shouldn't get the prize have flowed like rivers. Stinking up so bad.

I've never really followed the Nobel awards. The peace prize has always been political in nature - that shouldn't surprise anyone.

Nobody knows for certain when Obama was nominated. There is a strict cutoff date for nominations of February 1st. He could have been nominated any time before that. He may even have been nominated before he took office, but almost certainly after he was elected. Information about nominations, including the names of other nominees, is sealed by the committee for 50 years.

Mr. Prez, congrats on the award. Put it up on the mantel and get the economy moving the right (proper) way. That will get you re-elected.

His merits as mentioned by other articles is his efforts in the Middle East. Isn't that his accomplishments? Or maybe his effort was that he took a ####### on a wing nut?

He almost pulled out of Iraq and Afghanistan too.. gotta give credit..Oh yeah, and he almost passed healthcare, and almost got us out the recession

Almost counts for something right?

Yes, but the person submitting the nomination would be risking their credibility with the committee by nominating someone who, at the time of the submission, had very little international influence. Once Obama was elected, and his future international influence was virtually guaranteed, he became a viable candidate.

There is a common misconception that the committee actually votes according to Alfred Nobel's instructions. This has not been true almost since the inception of the prize. In it's early decades, the committees selections strongly reflected political opinions in Norway because the committee was composed almost entirely of Norwegian politicians. This ended in 1936, when members of Norwegian Government were barred from being committee members, in an effort to "depoliticize" the committee. This only worked marginally, since the committee is still hand picked by the Norwegian Storting.

There is a also a common misconception that the prize is only giving to people who have made concrete advancements in promoting peace peace (which is actually what Alfred Nobel intended). This is also often not true. The committee frequently gives the award to people who have not yet accomplished anything of substance, especially at critical times in history, in the HOPE that the prize will encourage them to follow through with their talk.

Still, many people in the world are stunned by the selection of Obama, who has talked a lot, but accomplished virtually nothing yet.
