This is the reason why he won it. It comes from the article on yahoo about how humbled he was to have won.

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which are awarded by Swedish institutions, the peace prize is given out by a five-member committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. Like the Parliament, the committee has a leftist slant, with three members elected by left-of-center parties. Jagland said the decision to honor Obama was unanimous.

Aagot Valle, a lawmaker for the Socialist Left party who joined the committee this year, said she hoped the selection would be viewed as "support and a commitment for Obama."

"And I hope it will be an inspiration for all those that work with nuclear disarmament and disarmament," she told The Associated Press in a rare interview. Members of the Nobel peace committee usually speak only through its chairman

Why did he win?

The question seems to be on many lips: why did President Obama win the Nobel Peace Prize just nine months into his presidency? "What achievement is this about?" some ask. The nominations closed only two weeks after he came to power. "What had he done by then?" people ask.

I think it is pretty obvious. As so often, the mystery clears up if you bother to read the text, in this case the citation. The committee praises him for intentions that were key to his whole campaign. It singles out working through the United Nations, for putting the emphasis on negotiations, international diplomacy and co-operation, for creating a new climate in international politics. In other words, because he's not President George W Bush and has steered American foreign policy, or at least its strategy if not its aims, in an opposite direction.

Not surprisingly, Republicans are furious. John Bolton, Bush's ambassador to the UN, has just told the BBC that it is no coincidence that Jimmy Carter and Al Gore also got the prize, but, not say, Ronald Reagan. He says the committee is "preaching at America, saying 'do you Americans get the point yet?'".

Joe, you need to read my post again. First of all, again, your use of derogatory comments to me is senseless and inappropriate. I was addressing the commen that the NPP was pointless and meaningless. Second of all, if you read my post again, you will see description of why NPP winners are nominated to begin with.

I am just as surprised as anyone else by Obama's win, however, I can understand the reasons for the committee's choice, even if I don't fully agree with them.

There's a new tone in Washington, D.C. that seeks to re-integrate the US into the international community and return the institutions created to foster peace and international cooperation to the center of the world stage. As an American, I am proud that the head of my country has been selected for this prestigious award.

For the first time in my adult life, I'm ashamed to be an American. Why not just give Obama the medal for playing basketball at the Special Olympics?

Fostered peace in Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan. . . oh so many places our man of peace has made all Obama followers proud.

Hey if you not proud to be a american.. Move.. what is stopping you.

If you forgot already... it was your Boy George W. Bush that brought this mess to begin with

I don't particularly like or dislike Obama. However, I think awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize is jumping the gun. Obama hasn't had time to do much of anything yet (good or bad) as president and to give him the Nobel Peace Prize only cheapens the award. Sure, the award is based on who has TRIED to broker peace and may or may not have succeeded. But what has Obama done? His greatest contribution has been that he isn't GWB. I'm sure that's fantastic for many people, but is that really enough for the Nobel Peace Prize?

I'm not Bush, I haven't invaded any countries or become a "warmonger" and people don't hate me (at least on the same scale that Bush was). So why can't I get the Nobel Peace Prize? I've accomplished just as much for the U.S. and the world as Obama has -- in other words, not a whole lot.

Someone earlier in this thread said, "Geez! Stop the whining and just be happy that a US president has received some recognition." That's the problem right there. Obama hasn't done anything to DESERVE it. Think of the situation like this: you're competing in the Olympics and you were awarded the gold medal for simply showing up. While an Olympic gold medal is nice and you worked hard to GET TO the Olympics, you didn't do anything in the actual event to EARN it.
