Did the guy say why it was "invalid"? He didn't do you any favors if he limited his explanation to this one word. If he didn't expand, I wold chalk it up to him not knowing what he was talking about. A SSN is an SSN. You either have one or you don't as far as I know.

 Vague error messages in software is a pet peeve of mine. This is similar to an error message dialog that proclaims "Error!" Ugh! If the SSA says there is no problem & you have your card, I wouldn't worry about it.

No need to worry as far as I can tell! Maybe it was an issue with the bank's system. Never rule out issues with software, trust me.

I'm curious....what sort of software does a bank have to check the validity of SSN numbers. If the SS administration was able to verify to you that your number is valid....what system is the bank using that would kick it back as invalid? Unless it was user error, on the part of the bank employee?

Something similar happened to my wife.

I tried to add her to my checkings account at BofA, and they told us they couldn't because it had just been issued. But the lady then said she just needed a manager's approval to authorize the addition.

I'm guessing our case was similar to yours, maybe go to another bank and try it again. The employee may not have known enough to do the paperwork.

January 2nd, 2009 - entered US on K1 Visa

January 10th, 2009 - Married in LA

February 12, 2009 - applied for I-485 AOS through lawyer

February 19,2009 - NOA1 received for I-765 & I-485

July 29, 2009 - get infopass appt. and ask about status of applications since nothing has happened. Told EAD had been approved April, 4,2009, but never received. Unclear what happened to it.

August 3, 2009 - Biometrics letter received for both EAD and AOS

August 13, 2009 - Biometrics appt. USCIS.gov "touched" EAD, card to be sent out. Finally something!

August 21, 2009 - EAD received & approved

September 4, 2009 - Interview date received

October 6, 2009 - AOS interview in Los Angeles, CA. Finally!

October 6, 2009 - APPROVED!!!!

July 15, 2011 - Applied to remove Conditions I-751

July 21, 2011 - Received NOA1

August 16, 2011 - Biometrics Appt. 12:00p.m. (received 7/28/11)

October 19, 2011 - E-mail approval/"card production ordered" received!!!

The Credit Reporting Agencies maintain a database of SSN's that have been issued along with which state they were issued in etc. It is updated monthly. So when you get a new issue number it may not be on the Credit Reporting Agencies database immiedately. When the bank runs a credit check and ID check it often comes up as SS invalid for the firt 5 or 6 weeks. It will change as sson as the updates go live. Nothing for you to worry about - it is just one of those things.

If your husband provided the name and number as shown on his Social Security number (SSN) card, unable to specifically determine why the SSN was reported as invalid, since SSA would not verify his Social Security number for a bank account, without his having provided SSA with written authorization.

The SSN consists of Area-Group-Serial (AAA-GG-SSSS):

http://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnweb.htm

The High Group list shows the highest Group number within each SSN Area that is in the process of being assigned and is updated monthly. Some businesses use the High Group list to determine if an SSN is valid. The company doing the verification may be using an old High Group list or the SSN was assigned from a Group within his SSN Area that has recently begun to be assigned.

You may find links to the current and previous months High Group lists on our Web site:

I had a similar situation with an employer who inputed my SSN and told me it was invalid. I had already had it for over 2 years at the time! I immediately contacted the SSA and told them what had happened. I spoke with an actual person and she verified that my SSN was valid. The only suggestion she had was that the employer made a mistake or was consulting a badly out-dated list. The problem is with the Bank and whatever system they are consulting and not with your SSN and card. You could go back and ask them to phone the SSN directly and speak to an individual rather than using the on-line verification system they were using and get validation of your number that way.

Good luck. Remember - to err is human but to really foul things up takes a computer!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
