POLICE CERTIFICATE AND MILITARY RECORD

Hi,

I am getting ready to apply for my parents using an I-130 and I am trying to get as prepared as possible. I know they have to get a police certificate from their home country (the UK) and also from any other countries that they lived in for more than 6 months since they were 16.

Well, my stepfather was in the British army and he and my mum lived in Germany for about 6 years - so do you think that they need to get the German police certificate as well as providing the military record? (I don't know if it is different becuase they were there on military orders?)

Also, has anyone else had to obtain a german police certificate and if so can you point me in the right direction please?

Having just been tripped up by the very documents to which you refer, I think I can safely answer your question!

Your stepfather will definitely need a German Police Certificate. This is obtainable from the:

Bundesamt für Justiz

- Bundeszentralregister –

Sachgebiet IV21/IR

53094 Bonn

Germany

The document required is found at

You must send a copy of your stepfathers passport photo page plus a cheque for £12. A normal cheque is fine. This is to be made payable to:

Bundesamt für Justiz

Obviously this also applies to your Mum. You will need applications for both.

Turnaround time from posting AirMail in the UK to Bonn and back is about 16 days. DO NOT use the Royal Mail AIRSURE service. Use normal airmail as the Bonn address is a PO Box and has no facility to accept 'signed for' mail and it can cause delays.

Now I was in the RAF and obtained my Record of Service from the RAF. However.... this was not enough for the NVC and they wanted my discharge papers which I actually had. You may want to contact PTROBER as his Dad was in the army and submitted his RED BOOK. Not sure what this is.

Sorry for forgetting that.

I used the skills of Angelika Davey:

I scanned and emailed the German Police Check and she sent the translation the next day. It cost me £9 inclusive of postal costs.

The translation has to have this statement:

I, TRANSLATORS NAME, certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and German languages and that the above document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled 'BUNDESAMT FUR JUSTIZ' in the name of PARENTS NAME.

I suggest you do this asap as the I-130's are going through quite quickly now and you may get some delays with UK Postal Strikes.
