I'm about as anti-Cheney as they come, and I'd certainly support impeachment on grounds unrelated to the hunting accident, but I don't think it's likely that the evidence around this incident supports guilt beyond all reasonable doubt. It looks like there is at least some possibility he didn't intend to shoot the guy, and there is at least some possibility his actions, while somewhat careless, fall short of criminal negligence. He wasn't otherwise committing a crime (one of the conditions that can cause a manslaughter conviction).

We have a fairly stiff burden of proof to impose criminal penalties against someone in this country, and we should keep it that way. In fact, I think the Bush/Cheney administration ought to obey rules resembling those present in the Constitution when they decide whether or not to jail people in Guantanamo, or whether to spy on US Citizens, but I'm digressing...

On the other hand, we ought to have fairly high standards of conduct for elected officials, higher than just absence of sufficient evidence to prove them guilty of a crime beyond all reasonable doubt. If this were something related to his job performance, it might warrant impeachment even without criminal conviction. But this particular incident is not closely related to his conduct in office.

Nope, if we're going to give him a fair trial and hang him, it should be for his part in the Iraq war, not for a careless hunting accident.

Figures that Cheney will get off scot-free. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department isn't even fining Cheney or his hunting partner for not having a valid hunting stamp on their licenses. They're just "citing" them. This is all so typical of this Administration. It seems everyone there is untouchable, and above the law.

In fairness, the law requiring the additional stamp is a very new law, and apparently many other people have been let off with warnings and stern instructions to obtain the stamp before hunting again.

Fact: He has always denied that he was driving drunk. No one has ever proved anything to the contrary.

Unfortunately, there were never any publicly held hearings on the matter.

It was all closed door hearing with the public barred.

That doesn't mean that the case was not investigated, many times by media. The fact is he was at a party, was observed to be intoxicated at that party, and frankly he disappeared following a fatal accident; a crime that you and I would do jail time for.

The only thing he was ever charged with was leaving the scene of a crime, his sentence was suspended. Perhaps it shouldn't have been, but the drunk driving allegations against him were never proven. If they had been, yes, he should have served time. It's also NOT a crime to not save someone else. I don't know what happened there, neither does anyone else but him. He has to live with himself if he got away with something like vehicular manslaughter.

Oh....and he's no hero of mine...just in case you needed to know...

Well, *the facts* are as follows: you and I were not allowed into the courtroom. The proceedings were "closed door" and so was the official record.

The facts are that the "investigation" and case against him was prematurely stymied because of who he was: the surviving brother of a dead president.

The facts are that many people that attended the party he was at came forward afterwards and attested to the fact that he had been intoxicated. Apparently the D.A. and the Judge felt that we, the people, have no need to hear the details of a drunken Senator driving his car off a bridge and subsequently killing a young woman.

There were many witnesses, and even some of his friends, residing in the same hotel that later attested to the fact that the morning following the "accident" he made no mention of it at all and simply carried on as nothing happened.

The fact that the democrats swept this incident under the rug for so many years is nothing short of...oh well what's the point in going on?

That's awesome mdyoung, I was talking to kaydee who assumes all people that vote democratic are the same though. I actually registered as independent but when I got my ballot to vote for President it told me I had to only vote for the independent party which in that election was Ralph Nader. I could have read it wrong but that's when I changed to Democratic as their views are the most similar to mine.

We need a third party to challenge the monopoly the Democrates and Republicans have on things, since to me one is almost as bad as the other. Remember that the Republicans used the House bank problems to help gain control of the House and now that they are running things Tom Delay is just as big of a crooked as Dan Rostenkowski. Term limits is what's needed as well. President can only be elect twice and same should go for members of Congress.
