Maybe the GOP will institute this whenever - of if ever - they regain a majority. Seems to me they had plenty of time to get that done and didn't. Where's the outrage, Danno? Not that it would be a bad idea but what makes this so urgent now - other than the current majorities in Congress?

what happened to the promise of transparency?

Congress promised transparency?

I think it's urgent now, because the wife has insomnia and I thought that if getting her to read all 6 versions of the healthcare bill didn't put her to sleep, I'd have to break out some Dostoyevsky.

The luxury of living under a representational democracy is that I don't have to do the job that Congress is elected to do.

Well, it's true that most people wouldn't read it, especially when you are talking about thousand page bills. All I ask is that congress reads it. They're getting paid enough to do mostly nothing. They aught to spend the time to read what they are voting for.

Also, even if not everyone reads it, I'm sure there are pundits that would and they would raise a stink if there was something ridiculous in it.

I'm mostly just tired of congressmen, on both sides of the aisle, claiming that they didn't know what they were voting for. Institute something like this. Then, the next time someone claims they didn't know that was in there, we'll know that they're incompetent. I'm not sure the voters would through him/her out for this, but one can only hope.

It's legal documentation written by lawyers. Congress members have aides who well versed in law comb over it and advise them. This is how it's always been done. There's simply not enough time in a day for Congressman to read over every single page of every bill that lands on his lap. And this isn't reading for dummies. Not everyone can read it over and understand it fully...which is why so many in Congress have law degrees.

The final version of the stimulus bill was published around midnight and the vote happened at 10 the next morning. Even if a congressman got all his aides up and pulled an all-nighter, I don't think he or she could figure out what's going on by the time the vote happened.

Sure, maybe a congressman should have some aides to read through the legalese and tell him what's really going on. I don't have a problem with that. I don't think that happens. If it did, we wouldn't have congressmen who claim that they don't know what they voted for.

What I have a problem with is when Congress signs a nearly trillion dollar spending bill and nobody in the world has read and understood it. They spent a trillion dollars and NOBODY knows what they bought. That's ridiculous.

Note - the final version of the bill. When it reaches that point, there's not a whole lot that is different from the version before that. I'm all for Congress taking their time on understanding whatever bill they are getting ready to vote on, but historically some bills have been rushed through for better or worse...see the Patriot Act.

I sure do. I want Right Wing extremists like you to stop with your propaganda attack machine and accept Obama as your legitimate, bonafide President...but I know that's expecting an awful lot.

Well, maybe the bill didn't change a lot going into the final version. But somehow I hear some congressmen claiming that a lot of the outrageous measures in the Stimulus bill were added in the dark of the night right before the final vote. Maybe it isn't true. All I'm asking is for a law that will force congress to take responsibility for the laws they pass.
