Hi everybody,

I know I'm kinda far away from the AOS (I'm expecting my NOA2 now, should be approved this week, yay!).

But I have the following dilemma.

I really want to change my last name to Nick's last name (and I'm the beneficiary) so I was wondering when should I change it on my SSN future card?

Before or after the AOS?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

If you take his name when you get married then use your legal (Nick's) last name from that point forward.

In our case we married 2 weeks after Linh arrive on her K1 and applied for the SS card, along with everything else, with her married name.

No need to go through the extra steps and expense to be changing names later on.

Best of luck on your K1 journey!

Ooooh, so Linh didn't apply for an SS card until she was married. I thought you should get the SS card before getting married.

If that's it, then it get things easier! Thanks a lot for your feedback, Anh map! :star:

You change the name WITH the AOS. File the I-485 in the desired married name. You can begin using your name immediately on marriage but the green card or EAD is the key government document to obtain. When filing for the SSN use the name as in the passport and change it after you have a green card.

So, change your name with SS AFTER AOS when your name will officially be changed. It will save you a TON of headaches with the SS administration and the name of the SS card is absolutely not important. SS cards are not comsidered valid ID

we differ from Anh Map in that Alla got her SSN number before we were married (the dsay after she arrived) Alla also never changed her name. But still, the act of getting the SSN and changing your name all at once tends to throw the SS administration into convulsions.

Hey, this is sort of on the same subject. On the I-864 Affidavit of Support. Part 2. Information on the principal immigrant, question 2, asks for the last name. Do I put my wifes married name that she has taken from me or her maiden that is on the K-1 Visa in her passport?

On a side note about the SS# the SS office told us to file under her maiden name because that was on the K-1 and they would reject it if we put her married name. (Of course it costs to have her name changed on her SS card)

My wife came here on the K1 visa and we applied for AOS with her married name. We just got approved yesterday for AOS, so there shouldn't be a problem. It took her a bit longer to get her SSN card under her married name, but she got her SSN and EAD under her married name.

January 2nd, 2009 - entered US on K1 Visa

January 10th, 2009 - Married in LA

February 12, 2009 - applied for I-485 AOS through lawyer

February 19,2009 - NOA1 received for I-765 & I-485

July 29, 2009 - get infopass appt. and ask about status of applications since nothing has happened. Told EAD had been approved April, 4,2009, but never received. Unclear what happened to it.

August 3, 2009 - Biometrics letter received for both EAD and AOS

August 13, 2009 - Biometrics appt. USCIS.gov "touched" EAD, card to be sent out. Finally something!

August 21, 2009 - EAD received & approved

September 4, 2009 - Interview date received

October 6, 2009 - AOS interview in Los Angeles, CA. Finally!

October 6, 2009 - APPROVED!!!!

July 15, 2011 - Applied to remove Conditions I-751

July 21, 2011 - Received NOA1

August 16, 2011 - Biometrics Appt. 12:00p.m. (received 7/28/11)

October 19, 2011 - E-mail approval/"card production ordered" received!!!

Some state accpets SSN using the new last name or the husband's last name but some don't.
