I'm pretty sure my husband and I will spend Christmas apart too. I don't really want to celebrate it with his family and can't bear to be away from my family for such an important holiday and I don't think he really wants to leave his family... so I'm a-ok with spending it apart. We've spent apart for this long, so it's no biggie for me. Once we have kids though, we'll need to split our time somehow. When my cousin in California flys to Toronto for Xmas, they usually fly in from Dec 20th and then fly straight to her husband's family in Vegas on Christmas morning. With the time change, they still make it there on time to enjoy Christas day with his family. I think that's something I'll consider. Celebrate with my family Dec 24th and then fly back to NYC around 1 p.m. the next day and spend Xmas day with his family.

I love canned cranberries only because of the sound they make coming out of the can... and then how it justs sit there slightly wigglinig in perfect formation... it looks like a jelly can.

I tried making it one year and it was good but it just wasn't the same...

Haha. My husband and I were on polite speaking terms only after I talked to him about it last night. He didn't want me to drive and I refused to pay $500-$600 for a return flight. So I just read an email from my cousin about coming to visit and that was the last straw. Just for giggles I decided to take a look at Westjet's flights and they had two seats left for tomorrow only @ $109. So I took one. My husband may not be as excited about it as I am when he comes home this evening. lol

Guess I'd better find that extension letter from USCIS since my greencard has expired. icon2.gif

When the kids were small, and that is a long time ago, we used to do Thanksgiving at one set of in laws and Christmas at the other. Next year we reversed, so if we were at his parents for Christmas one year we were with mine the next. I couldn't see any other way to do it..but I don't think either one the in laws was ever happy with the arrangements.

I was almost pleased when we moved away from both in laws..end of drama and we had both holidays on our own.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

We've resolved that we don't spend Christmas with anyone but ourselves - we have no desire to play the inlaw game. I mean - why should we have to travel all over just to make sure we've visited everyone? Now of course, I don't live that close to my parents anymore - but even back home, my daughter and I would mosey on over on Christmas afternoon and have dinner at my parents - but we awoke in our own house and enjoyed our own traditions.

Sapphire - im sad that this is your first Christmas together as a married couple - why are you spending it apart? :(

I'm not really that sad about it, to be honest! Christmas for me is about being with my family and friends and visiting people. I don't like to be alone. Even if I'm with my husband, I like to celebrate in big groups. I love my family traditions. My Grandparents are also a huge part of our Christmas celebration, right now we really do it for them. They love having the whole family together and get very upset when we try to break any tradition. My grandmother is paralyzed and they are not going to be around forever, so it's important for me to be with them on Christmas. Actually Christmas eve is spend with my Mom's side of the family (she's one of 4) and said Grandparents, Xmas morning is spend with just my parents, siblings and I and then Christmas Day dinner is spent with my Dad's side of the family (he's one of 7). I've never been the type to miss out on a family party or get together. I love them. I guess that's not the norm??

My husband and I have never spent 1 major holiday together to this day. I mean something's gotta give at some point and I know that, but I'm not ready to just give up on being with my family for Christmas. I see my husband every day. A few days at Xmas apart won't kill us. I just know that eventually when my Grandparents are not around, we will not have the huge family gatherings anymore and my siblings and I will all have kids and we'll just have our own Christmas. I already told my Mom that I will host in NY when we have a house and have it here, and my sister can host it one year and then my bro can host it one year. My in-laws are also retiring in Vegas in 4 years or so, so I'm guessing at some point we'll have to go there for Xmas too with the kids.

My husband and I have yet to start our family tradition for Xmas, and I'm okay with that. Actually my grandmother doesn't even think we're married yet! Our big family wedding is next year, so we call this our "Practice Year of Marriage". LOL.

Next Xmas will be our first official Xmas together!

Yay for Thanksgiving!! This is my first away from home, so I actually made a grocery list today and I'm going shopping tomorrow to buy all my items, I'm making Thanksgiving dinner Sunday night :) Just for hubby and moi. I don't feel like doing it Monday since I'm working and won't get a chance to do everything. So I'm making turkey breast for hubby, mashed potatoes, broccoli, string beans, gravy, stuffing, and a few other veggies for me :D I make a vegetarian stuffing and gravy too so I can eat that as well!

As for Christmas, my first one here my Mom came to visit which was wonderful. So I got to spend it with Mom and hubby. This year, we're both going to Canada for Christmas as it falls on a Friday which is perfect. His family is totally fine with it, we decided to take turns on holidays (like one xmas here, next there, etc.) and they are understanding that he won't be with them every holiday. I would be totally fine though, like Sapphire and Sprailenes, to spend Christmas apart from him. My family is too important to choose my in-laws over them! Christmas is just another day, and I don't need to spend them all with him.

Krikit, I'm glad you decided to go home! That's great

Not much thought???

I've been putting thought into this since last thanksgiving!!

I need to figure out a new strategy. I was thinking, cook it early, eat early, and then I'll be able to recoup and come back later for more. The whole elastic waist pants doesn't always work... in fact I think the stretchable waist gives one a false sense of security and lets you down more than lets you out... if you know what I'm sayin.

LoL, So do you have your "Holiday Eating" clothes?

I used to but like I said... they give one a false sense of security... you need more than an adjustable waist to get more bang for your buck on thanksgiving.

So tomorrow is the BIG day! I don't planning on eating at all until dinner... we got a turkey today and all the fixens... I don't know if anyone can understand just how excited I am but I am pretty darn excited!! :D

Donne moi une poptart!

Not eating all day until dinner will leave you with hardly eating anything. Just snack through the day.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Montreal Interviewer: "What do you have in common with each other?"

Peachey: "We're REALLY weird."

Montreal Interviewer (incredulously to me): "Do you agree with that?"

<I think back to several days before the interview. Driving through the country, passing a field with cows...>

Peachey: "MOOOO! MOOOOO! Does this make me weird?"

Me: "No, well yes. Here, let me roll down the windows so they can hear you better!"

Peachey: "MOOOOO!!!!"

<back to interview>

Me: "Yes, yes I do."
