The next thing you know they will ban all the foods that are bad for you because it makes people over weight which then somehow causes problems for others. I don't think anyone should be told what they can or cannot do in their home so long as it doesn't directly effect others.

Only in Apartments it is not THEIR home, it is rented... If they buy a home, they are free to smoke it up, turn the walls yellow and make whatever space they need for the oxygen tanks when they cannot breathe on their own anymore...

However, if you rent an apartment, it is not correct that they smoke up the place and when another renter comes in, they have to live with that smell, carpet burns, nicitone in the AC system and everything else. I do not think it is wrong to ban smoking in Rentals... If you own, different story!

As long as I pay my rent, and the building owner/manager allows me to smoke, everyone else has to deal. Otherwise they can move to a non-smoking building, of which there are many.

Like sister Lisa said: why not crack down on drunks? they are annoying, loud, disrespectful... they should not be allowed to drink in rental apartments.

This crucifixion of smokers has gone beyond absurdity. I have yet to hear of someone go to jail for driving while smoking; or beat their spouses up because he/she was high as a kite on tobacco. This just another way of not talking about the real issues.

I'd rather sit beside a smoker in a restaurant than somebody with a screaming kid.

I think kids should be banned from apartments. Look at the wear and tear the little feckers cause.

In some lovely places, they are :)

Hahahaha! Really?

hell yeah. Gated communities type condos. problem is, they usually don't let you smoke, either

How about falling asleep with a lit cig and burning the place down.I have seen it happen. Parents have rental property. After replacing kitchen tile, Bedroom rugs, and bathroom sinks(burnt holes) they will never rent to a smoker. Most of these people that trash these places skip out on the last months rent. After all that is what a security deposit is for right. If you own your own place do with it as you see fit. Non smokers are happy to find a place that has never been smoked in. Landloards are well within the law to limit smoking in their property.

You don't have to be a smoker to trash an apartment, ya know.

If I was renting and somebody told me I couldn't smoke in their property, I'd just move on and find a landlord that would. Not everybody is a judgmental a$$ all the while they hold out their hand for the rent check.

Reminds of the BS I used to hear 30 years ago when I was just going out into the world and looking for a place to live. Back then the politically correct group of people to refuse rental housing to were 'unmarried' couples. "No shacking up in my property".

I'm more curious WHY tobacco and alcohol are the only two addictive drugs that kill the most while other substances are not addictive and are banned. Prohibition to line the pockets of the wealthy. Amsterdam has a fraction of addiction we have only because of their safe zone...use away in the safe zone on your time off then get back to work when you're all done. For some reason it works.

The reason is because of our for profit prison system that's been caught paying off judges and senators and police forces to incarcerate for 50k profit per prisoner...the war on drugs is war on people.

Alcohol causes more damage than cigarettes, ban that. I don't get behind the wheel and kill people, beat my wife and kids or act beligerent because Im high on nicotine...just saying

I have never been a smoker, I have been a drinker though, and never done any of those ^^ things.....I recently had a some tests done and damage was found to my lungs that can only be put down to passive smoking over the years, living with parents that smoked heavily and years of working in bars....I can't recall any damage to others that my drinking may have caused, hurt feelings maybe? . Saying that, people should be allowed to smoke within their own space, I live with a smoker, but he doesn't smoke in the house at all out of respect for our things and those of us who don't wish to breathe in his habit.

Smoking is not allowed inside apartments in my complex, but one of my neighbors, probably the upstairs neighbor, ignores the rule. I know because I smell it whenever he/she does, primarily in my kitchen, but sometimes as soon as I walk in the door. My daughter has asthma and it has gotten so bad that she has to inhale steroids every day. I'd move if I could afford to break my lease but I can't.

Smoke all you want, but not in my air. I was raised to believe that I'm supposed to be considerate of others. I'm always careful not to make noise to disturb my neighbors; I don't put my trash outside for even a second before I bring it to the bin; I don't put a lot of tacky decorations on my door for holidays even though I'd like to do it for my daughter; etc. When I smoked years ago, I was always considerate of others. Be a little considerate of others. That's all.

I agree that we have gone a bit crazy with the smoking bans, but that's a world I'm HAPPY to live in. The truth is, when you smoke, so does everybody around you, so you are always infringing on other people's right to live smoke free.
