I am eligible to file for Naturalization at the beginning of March 2010. I am looking to file as soon as possible, although I may be gone for family reasons for a number of weeks in May/June. I noticed in some of the Guidelines that there is a requirement to remain in the US after application for naturalization, but I am wondering if this related to remaining a resident as opposed to remaining present during the course of the application?

I am just curious, if, other than the risk of having to return hastily for biometrics/interview/etc, there was any possible threat to the application in travelling after filing. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I traveled several times while I was waiting for the approval of my N-400, I had no problems at all. Just make sure you keep a good record of the dates you are outside the USA, you will need to update your information at the time of the interview with the dates you were away.

As for the Biometrics appointment it can be rescheduled without too much hassle. The N-400 interview can also be rescheduled but I would be reluctant to delay that interview.

We filed 31Mar, biometrics 17Apr, interview 17Jul, oath 3Sep, US passport 13Sep, all in 2008. Moved a lot quicker than the posted processing dates and with the USCIS, once you applied, you are literally chained to your mailbox. To get any half way decent airline rates, have to plan a couple of months in advance or end up paying a huge fortune. Just some things to think about, what you really need is a crystal ball that works.
