The jail-screening effort helped officials catch nearly 30,000 illegal immigrants since the program began in February 2007, but it was the street-level enforcement that caused the most controversy and produced less substantial results, capturing about 264 illegal-immigration suspects.

The sentence you put in bold, and more importantly, the subsequent one that you failed to bold completely invalidates the sheriff's position. Furthermore, the sheriff has no authority to patrol for illegal immigrants on the street. That is the jurisdiction of ICE.

ICE is cannot be expect to be everywhere. Common sense and clearly something that eludes you. The Sheriff should have the right to arrest these individuals and then send them to ICE. Sounds like you're proposing that illegal aliens should basically be above the law, all in the name of not discriminating.

Clearly, understanding the concept of jurisdiction evades you. Get a clue, then come back and post. Enforcement of immigration is the duty of ICE. I don't propose making illegal aliens above the law. I do think ICE should receive the federal funding that they need to adequately do their jobs, something they are sorely lacking currently.

Should have? Maybe, maybe not but currently he does not. It isn't the illegal aliens that are/want to be 'above' the law ;)

Of course it's not the illegal aliens. It's the wankers who are trying to protect and defend them, at a time when America is facing the worst financial crisis since the depression.

So you want ICE to patrol every city, county and border? You're definitely the American spouse right? As no foreigner would be this stupid.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Seriously, are you really that stupid? Learn a bit about law enforcement jurisdiction. It's quite clear, and written in stone.

If you honestly believe that the ends justify the means as it pertains to things like infringements on the constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens, then there isn't much left to discuss.

Its a strange way to promote "democracy" by endorsing totalitarianism in law enforcement.

As Benjamin Franklin famously said: "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security."

You guys are full of it considering how strict European laws are against illegal aliens. They cannot even burp without being being deported.

Every country has its share of undocumented workers. Don't kid yourself. And there are European countries that actually give those undocumented workers a lot of rights.

Calm down BY you are getting over excited.

It's freagin frustrating to see so many people talking illogical #######. When the Australian police or the coast guard catch someone illegal, they hand them over to their ICE. ICE cannot patrol the entire freagin country. Furthermore, ICE is busy processing those caught and carrying out immigration raids. Something people scorn here.

That is incorrect considering the fines employers receive for hiring illegal aliens. In the UK alone, the fines are in the thousands, per offense. I remember posting their new rules a while back. End result, many illegal aliens have left the UK on their own.

Like health care, someone here has to wonder why no body else implements US style polices or has US style stances on issues such as illegal aliens. It cannot be that hard to use a bit of common sense and learn from others, every once in a while.

That is how it works here. But there is not jurisdiction for city, county, or state police to patrol for illegal immigrants. They can, in the course of their investigation determine this information and then hand them over to ICE. What they cannot do is troll the streets for people they simply suspect of being illegal immigrants. In Australia, do the police go out and actively search out illegal immigrants on the streets of Sydney?

Yeah what would I know, our family friend is only a magistrate here in the states.

As he said, unless it's a felony, they have to let illegal aliens go. They have many repeat offenders that are illegal aliens but they cannot arrest them regarding immigration. This would never happen in AUS. ICE can even catch you eating at a restaurant, let alone after you have committed a crime.

Of course not. But once you are found to be an illegal alie, you will be deported. Any illegal alien caught committing a crime is deported and banned. With a stern warning of come back again and you will face prison time. Their ICE on the other hand can ask anyone to prove they are legal residents. I saw it happen on their border security show once where they raided a restaurant and just so happened to randomly ask a patron there to pick up an order questions, who turned out to be an illegal alien. Deported.

What would I know, I only work in law enforcement myself. Yes, they do let people cited for misdemeanors go, but that is across the board for all people. They are released on their own recognisance and issued a court date for arraignment. They do however report them to ICE along with their information if it is either determined that they are not legal. The honus is on them to do their job. I know full well though that ICE is overwhealmed and under funded, this is the crux of my argument. However, if you make illegal immigration enforcement the duty of local law enforcement, you will create havoc for them. It undermines their ability to investigate at best, and will completely clog their already overburdened job. The federal government needs to fully fund ICE to allow them to do the job they were entrusted to do.

BY, how many undocumented workers are in the EU? Do you know?

No I don't know. What I do know is how difficult it is for someone, even with a visa, to initially do anything(function) there. Furthermore, what the fines are for anyone caught employing illegal aliens. I believe the UK's fine was 15,000 pounds. You will not find one article in BBC that excuses illegal aliens committing crimes, with a well citizens do it too.
