Tax returns AND transcripts?

We have our interview date on Oct 29th.

We will be using a co-sponsor for the I-134. We have tax returns and W2's for 2006, 2007 and 2008, 3 months pay stubs, letter from employer for all those signing the I-134.

I had called up the embassy and they said only one year was needed for tax returns. Does not matter, I'll bring all just incase. The problem comes up when the banks refuse to notarize the returns because they were electronically filed. We tried calling IRS to fax them over since they claim to take 1-2 weeks to mail things and the last time we tried asking them to mail it, it got lost. Long story short, we don't have access to a fax machine. Leo's grandma in another state has one but the IRS refused to fax it over unless the person was physically present there. Both Leo and his dad (co-sponsor) only have access to a public fax machine and are not comfortable with their transcripts possibly being seen by others. IRS states the fax is automated so it could take anywhere between 24-48 hours to be faxed which increases this possibility. Grandma's fax is out.

That leaves 3 weeks or so for them either to contact IRS and have them mail it and have it mailed to me, supposing it does not get lost like it did before, or to take a chance and go there with just the returns, W2's, pay stubs and employer letters. I don't know if there is time for the mailing option. We should have done this before but we did not find out until later that his dad only had 1040's and not transcripts. And found out later that 1040's can't be notarized if they're electronically filed. And then we spent some time trying the fax option but that did not work out. So now we're back to square one and 3 weeks deadline. At first, we were comfortable with the idea of just returns without transcripts but reading that thread has made me panic. (I read the thread about the Ghana interview going awry because both were needed).

My question is,

1. Does anyone know if this 24-48 hour thing to fax is real or bullshit?

2. How long did it take to mail the transcript to you if you ordered one?

3. Is it absolutely necessary to have BOTH? How many of you have had to use both?

4. The woman at the embassy was speaking on behalf of the CO and did not sound confident. Should I trust her and try to wing it with what we have?

Just for added info, I've already booked my flight ticket to the state where the embassy is at and the hotel for the 29th. So the date can't be changed. Leo and his dad are in different states so that's why 3 weeks is not enough time. There will be the wait for IRS to mail it over to his dad. The wait for his dad to mail it to him and the wait for Leo to mail to me. I don't think his dad will be comfortable mailing it straight to me either. And his dad is not tech savvy enough to be able to scan it and email it to me or fax it to me.

1. From what I understand they usually arrive in less than 30mins or so, I think they just say that as a standard practice.

2. I ordered them 2 times and both times they arrived to me in less than 10 days.

3. No you generally only need one or the other. Ghana is a difficult embassy, and we really don't have all the information to know why they are pushing this particular case so much. ALSO I did need a copy of my 2008 transcript before I flew to the Philippines in May and they were not available by phone but I called the local IRS office and was able to get a copy there, Not really sure where you are located but most MAJOR metro areas have local IRS offices.

4. Generally most cases only need the last years unless your case is difficult or SELF EMPLOYMENT is involved.

Good Luck

Copies of the tax returns - not just the front 1040 page - along with supporting W-2s should be sufficient. Transcripts are necessary when people do not have W-2 copies.

Don't know how difficult your embassy will be -- sometimes I-134s aren't reviewed that much for K-1s, since you have to adjust with the I-184(I forget the number) which requires more details.

Good Luck!!!

1. Tax returns do not normally have to be notarized. But why would the bank not notarize yours if you re-sign them in front of them? Sounds crazy, go to a different notary if you really feel you need to do this (FWIW Kiev states in their instructions that the tax returns be notarized but will tell you on the phone they do not have to be and the instructions are old. I took a copy of my electronically filed taxes to the bank, signed in front of the teller/notary and she notarized them...just to be safe)

2. Tax transcripts can be faxed to you same day if you have access to a fax number. You DO have access to a fax number. There are dozens of pack/ship places with fax machines that will accept faxes for you for a small fee. Kinkos is one. Staples Office Supply, Mailboxes, Etc., UPS stores...keep going, there are dozens and dozens of them. Time to break out the old fashioned YELLOW PAGES

3. Normally it is necessary to have only one. Though there is a post from yesterday about the consulate in Ghana demanding BOTH from an applicant. strange. I never used transcripts.

4. NO. Because YOU are not confident. Call back and ask to speak to someone that makes YOU comfortable. OR cover your @ss and bring everything and give it all to them
