I'd like to know when I can get a credit card here and how since as an Immigrant I do not have a credit score yet.

Do they check my credit in Germany?Wouldn't be a problem because I got great credit there.

Natasha

Met on May 17,2005

Got engaged on Sep 15th,2006

Came to the US for good on Jan 27th,2009

and we got married on March 28th,2009

GOD , grant me the serenity

to accept the things I can not change

the courage to change the things I can

and the wisdom to know the difference!

On Sound Money on NPR this weekend, they answered the question of a British immigrant on how to go about getting a credit card in the US. I highly highly recommend listening  It gives good steps on how to build up your credit score. My husband is following this advice and will be applying for a security credit card from out bank soon.

Our economics editor Chris Farrell answers more of your burning money questions. This week, advice on creating a credit history, building a retirement strategy and investing in a low-fee mutual fund.

I joined my husband's bank account, was signed as a co applicant for his visa and amex card. The apartment lease has both our names but all the bills only have his name. I applied for an old navy card a couple months after I moved here and was approved for a $400 credit. Couple months back I applied for a card with mbna and go a $1000 credit.

Truth is I really don't know how this works but I think my credit is building if I could get a 1000 credit. heh.

I had opened an account with my ITIN, so when I got my SSN, I applied for a credit card from BOA and got a secured card with a $500 limit ($99 held in a savings account). This was much better than the $250 I thought I was going to have to fork over. Oh, this is a card in my name only.
