Do we need to go to the ss office first before we get married?Or can we get married then go to the ss office?Or do we need to go the the ss office, then get married and then back to the ss office?

I have read alot of mixed answers on this, some may be outdated,so could someone please tell me what the correct answer is:)

The best practice is to enter the US, wait about 2 weeks (so she shows up in the SAVE system) and apply for the social security card in her maiden name.

Get married when ever you choose (obviously before the 90-days runs out) - then file AOS - once the PR/Green Card comes - go back and get the SS Card in the married name.

That is the fool-proof method - works every time.

There is a guide for getting a SS card in the Guides Section.

If the K-1 has not been in the U.S. for over 76 days, there is no reason not to try to apply for the name change before the 77th day.

If you want to apply for the SSN and original card in the married name, try to give yourself at least a month before the 77th day to allow for any immigration verification that needs to be done. If that's not possible, go apply in the maiden name after you have been here at least ten days.

Go tot he SS office the dya after she arrives. Apply in her name as in her passport. If she changes her name after marriage than go back after you have a green cayd in her married name. There is no need to wait two weeks. The SAVE system which registers legal US entries updates every night at 12:01 am. Alla applied for her card 16 hours after arriving and had the card in hand in 6 days.

There is a SS guide here somewhere, print it out in case you have to train their clerks. DO NOT leave until they have accepted your application and told you that you will have the card in 2 weeks or less (usually about 1 week) The next business day you can get the SS NUMBER by calling the office. Ask them what number to call to get this.

Alla arrived on a Thursday, we applied Friday morning. We called the SS office from the bank parking lot at 9am Monday and got the number. We went in the bank and added her to our account. We went to her university and finished the enrollemnt papers and she started university classes Tuesday. She needed the SS number for these things.

I disagree. Get the SSN before you unpack bags.

The card itself is useless, do not worry about that. Alla did not change her name and has the same card she got on arrival, yes it says "not valid without...yada, yade" and what? Who sees the card? She has her authorization to work and a SS card is not an authorization for anyone to work, not even a citizen, no matter what it says. I LOST my card in 1973, who CARES what it says?

You can change her name on the card after you have her green card...or not. It is not important.

It can take 8-10 days for a K-1 entrant's information/data to show up in the system SSA uses - going before the system is updated doesn't help matters.

it depends. In California, if you have different name on SSN and green card, you'll come up no name match when applying for driver's license.

If you are not an immigrant or did not apply for a Social Security number on your immigrant visa application, you must have your papers from DHS showing your U.S. immigration status and authorization to work in the United States. Then you should apply for a Social Security number and card by visiting an office. We recommend you wait 10 days after arriving in the United States to apply for a Social Security number.

So I guess they are supposed to camp out at the office for weeks until the immigration status verification is completed? If you were given an SSN over the phone someone f*cked up, because SSA policy has been for at least a couple years to not give out SSNs over the phone

If your wife got her SSN assigned that soon after she arrived that is the exception, not the rule. Now I will grant you that there is no requirement to wait ten days to apply and if you go right in they are supposed to accept the application.
