i don't know about making people thinner by taxing soda. heavier taxes on cigarettes have not stopped the majority of people from smoking. all in all, if people want to do something, they will find the means necessary to get it.

Exactly. It's about revenue, not health.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Watermelons are a not a health risk and in fact are an excellent source of vitamin c so I can't see any reason to tax it, or any other fruit or vegetable for that matter.

Not sure what you mean by taxing BBQ - the sauce? I don't have a problem with taxing BBQ sauce either, but it's not a very neat category to apply taxes to. What is or isn't a BBQ sauce? It's very easy to identify what is and isn't soda for tax purposes.

They're loaded with sugar too. Just because it's in a fruit doesn't mean it's automatically healthy.

It's about moderation!!

Yes, too many people eat too much watermelon, it's really a problem that we need to combat!

As I said already, I don't see the tax on soda as a panacea for weight loss but I certainly think it's fair game for taxation.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

It's about revenue, sure, but what's wrong with generating revenue from something that can be proven to cause health issues? How many health issues are caused by eating too much fruit? How many Dr's are placing advisories out on reducing fruit consumption? Seriously dude, you live in cloud cuckoo land

Admit it you do not own anything, you do not earn anything thus you think it is wonderful to tax all of us that do already own things and earn a lot and thus we should pay even more tax so people like you can have more welfare or socialized health care right?

Why not tax the health issues directly though, rather than tax things that *might* lead to health issues? There are plenty of people who drink an occasional soda that are perfectly healthy. I think it sends a message that it is the thing itself (i.e. the soda) that is bad rather than the over-consumption of it (the behavior), which is the real problem.

ZQT, don't live in society and then you will not have to contribute to the fabric of it via taxation. I personally would be willing to grant you tax exemption if you no longer benefit from anything that taxes contribute to.

 i would love it if they only taxed things that would cause a health issue, ie sugar, alcohol, cigs, etc. that way everything else, clothes, houses, cars, fruits, and veggies would be tax free. healthier world, and richer from savings on taxes.

true, true...

but how would you tax the health issue? if you have a kidney problem because u obviously drink 2lt of soda instead of water a day, then pay an extra tax for the dumbness of it? not a bad idea lol I must say

No thanks, there are no free lunches in this world and everything comes with a high cost and people like you wanting to tax everything all the time scare the hell out of me, why don't you move to England and pay their taxes. See how you like it or better yet try Canada.

Drinking a lot of soda does put you at risk for all kinds of problems. If you only drink the odd one a 7c tax isn't going to make a darned bit of difference to you one way or another. If you want to drink 10 a day a 7c tax might make you cut back. It might not, but it should at least send you a message.

Soda is and should be viewed as a luxury of sorts (it is definitely not an essential food source) and taxation of luxuries is fair. What message that sends? Well, everyone has a different take on taxation as it is. Most Americans view tax as evil no matter what good can be provided by contributing to society in this way.
